Sony objects to “Dolphin Tank”

Shark Tank owners not happy with a trademark for women entrepreneurs pitching business ideas.

Sony Pictures Television will object to a Dolphin Tank trademark by a women’s startup group claiming it is too similar to its own Shark Tank.

US-based non-profit group Springboard Enterprises funds women-led startups with female entrepreneurs pitching to a live audience, adopting a softer approach than TV’s Shark Tank.

But Sony is claiming Dolphin Tank is “substantially identical or deceptively similar” to existing trademarks and “similar to a trademark which has acquired a reputation in Australia”.

Brisbane Times reports Springboard intend to oppose the motion.

Both parties declined to comment further on the case.

Shark Tank, based on Japan’s Dragon’s Den, screened on 10 until 2018, produced by Endemol Shine Australia.

10 says it has not ruled out the show making a return at some point.

  1. Hilariously uninspiring for a start up inspiration company to come up with such an unoriginal name – They should feel embarrassed. Hardly shows they’re good at what they do.

  2. Dolphin Tank. What a stupid name. I’m surprised Shark Tank is out of schedule as it rated kind of OK (for Ten) and correct me if I’m wrong but surely it would cost nothing to Ten as I assume the Sharks aren’t paid and they are investing their own money (not Ten’s). And they could have built on Janine’s popularity from Survivor.

      1. Nevertheless assumedly its still not an expensive show to make, especially in comparison to prime time reality and dramas. Shark Taken often rated better than 10s dramas at the 8.30pm slot too.
