Why do so many viewers switch off Nine after MAFS?

It’s as if everybody has to take a cold shower after watching it….
Married at First Sight was #1 at 1.09m for Nine but the network didn’t hold the audience thereafter.
Nine’s 9pm movie Trainwreck plummeted to just 207,000 for as viewers scattered to other offerings: Media Watch (551,000), Four Corners (483,000), 9-1-1 (361,000), Hughesy We Have a Problem (335,000) all ranked higher.
Nevertheless MAFS roundly defeated 7:30 (681,000), Australian Survivor (611,000), Australian Story (602,000) and My Kitchen Rules (451,000).
Nine network still comfortably won Monday with 31.3% then Seven 24.8%, ABC 18.9%, 10 18.4% and SBS 6.5%.
Nine News drew 888,000 / 881,000 for Nine. A Current Affair (779,000) and Hot Seat (429,000 / 249,000) followed.
Seven News won its slot with 949,000 / 938,000 for Seven. Home and Away was 575,000 and The Chase was 497,000 / 311,000.
ABC News (700,000), Q&A (394,000), The Drum (182,000) also comprised ABC’s night.
The Project pulled 448,000 / 273,000 for 10. 10 News First was 355,000 / 223,000.

I turn off from 9 before MAFS in order to avoid this bloody dreadful show!
MAFS is already a trainwreck the viewers didn’t need to watch another one straight after!
9.15 is too late to commit to a movie on a weekday anyway. We watched Botched after MAFS last week but yesterday changed to Hughesy.
People may turn off after MAFS cause there is something better on channel two. Their Monday line up is educational and entertaining.
Post has hit a nerve… Nine has yanked next Monday night’s My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2 for double Botched episode.
Yes, I’m sure TVTonight posts are an integral part of every schedule decision.
Ha, fair enough. Overreaching by me perhaps, but at least reading the data correctly in identifying concerns.
How exactly is Botched meant to improve things? Shorter run times = inflated ratings perhaps? Such a show is definitely after the same audience as Married though, that’s for sure! 😉
Less time commitment, similar genre as you note, first run.
Granted. But surely My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2 was a better flow than Train Wreck? Very odd decision last night.
The question should be why do they turn it on in the first place???
MAFS viewers watch MAFS. They probably stream stuff afterwards. They aren’t going to sit around for over 2 hours watching a dreadful movie they have seen before. Even with Paramedics there’s a 400k drop and Doctor Doctor 500k.
Still that’s better than Seven, their dramas with MKR as a lead-in are struggling to get past 300k.
The MAFS viewers are probably all having a shower after it finishes to wash the muck away !
I tape Survivor, and watch it fast forwarding ads after MAFS.But I go in waves of hating reality to loving it so Wednesday night Its First Dates straight after MAFS,but I think I enjoy the witty social commentary on twitter in real time, its often funnier than the shows.
Nobody wants to sit and watch a movie with ads interrupting it all the way through. People literally pay in droves to avoid doing it get free to air networks serve the movies then complain about a weak ad market when they’re making programming decisions in complete defiance of audience expectations.
I do. I have a short attention span thanks to social media, so the ads break a movie up into manageable chunks.
A combination of the reasons people have said. But also just because people like a trashy tv show doesn’t mean they don’t also enjoy the likes of Media Watch and Four Corners.
I have a theory Media Watch is benefiting from MAFS ending just after 9, because many other shows are already underway.
Sounds like Nine’s ratings from 9pm were a ‘trainwreck’ 😉
Having watched a 90 minute trainwreck few wanted to watch another.
To be fair to Nine, Trainwreck is a woefully bad film. And, the MAFS lead-out shows are holding the audience better on other nights. 60 minutes did 900K on Sunday and Paramedics has been doing good business on Tuesdays.
MAFS wraps 8:30 on Sundays so a bit different. Happy to acknowledge better transitions on Tue and Wed.
Wife and I really enjoyed Trainwreck when we watched it on Foxtel. LeBron James penny pinching the whole way through is hilarious.
The FTA networks have conditioned viewers to switch off after their 7.30pm shows.
I concur. I wouldn’t start watching a movie at 9pm on a Monday night and if MAFS finished at 8:45, then a drama could’ve at least kept 1/2 the viewers….
Movies no longer work on free to air tv. People have either seen them in cinemas, downloaded it, watched on pay tv, or bought dvd. Only people who really liked it or hadn’t seen it would be watching!
Many movies per week (usually on weekends) still do 300-400k+, also nightly make Top 20 in multi-channels, so I don’t think that’s entirely true.
They just don’t do 900k-1m+ like they did a decade ago.
Putting a movie on at 9pm is rediculous. Put 1 hr shows on even if its an overseas show. They should do a local version of cheaters lol.
What I need to know is who are the 451k who have stuck with MKR and are they enjoying it or has it just become a habit? I tape it and then fast forward through pretty much all of it as it is now virtually unwatchable. This year has become a mash up of Big Brother, MAFS, and now Survivor with some super strategising going on. Absolute bare minimum of cooking shown.
Manu & Colin really deserve better than this. Wonder if Garry & Matt are watching and gritting their teeth?
As a loyal viewer of MKR …I am just about to stop watching it …it is not about the food anymore it is all about the drama …and I cannot stand Mark in the show at all …. Jac and Shaz to win thou
Trainwreck is a god awful movie with a god awful lead, and as I have said so many times before I do not believe in lead in effect, has electronic program guide will use, and Amy Schumer is awful, truly, I cannot comprehend how people find her funny.
It still puzzles me why/how so many people watch it?! I know it’s each to their own but…
Given that the movie probably finished after 11pm on a work night, it’s quite understandable that viewers didn’t stay around.
