1.23m for bumper MasterChef launch

Ratings: 10 wins Monday as a self-isolating audience delivers biggest launch since 2015.

MasterChef Australia has launched its ‘Back to Win’ series to a bumper 1.23m viewers -the best launch since 2015.

Curiosity in the new judges, together with a self-isolating audience and little competition, paid off in droves for 10.

The show led in demos and easily surpassed 2019’s launch of 715,000 viewers. New judges Jock Zonfrillo, Melissa Leong and Andy Allen have been largely well-received in social media, cleverly eased into the format with familiar returning guests and drawcard Gordon Ramsay.

Next in the slot were 7:30 (770,000), Australian Story (662,000), House Rules (548,000) and RBT (422,000). The crowd ensured 10 won the night, with Seven in second place and Nine pushed to third.

10 won Monday with 26.8% then Seven 25.2%, Nine 23.5%, ABC 17.2% and SBS 7.2%.

Elsewhere Seven News was #1 with a huge 1.3m / 1.27m viewers ahead of Nine News 1.18m / 1.1m.

ABC News drew 954,000.

Home & Away returned to 676,000 viewers.

Full ratings wraps resume next week.

  1. Last night was my first MasterChef episode ever. Already much better than MKR after just one episode. No bitching for the sake of bitching.

  2. I enjoyed MasterChef like everyone else but oh boy I can’t say the same for House Rules. To me renovating that old penthouse (I actually thought the old Focus building was going to get torn down because it was starting to lean?) but anyway, ridiculously drawn out and a waste of time. Good to see the houses starting tonight.

    1. I watched house rules and Masterchef last night, as you say house rules so drawn out as last 45 minutes was used to reveal the scores, just to drawn out with recap after recap, need to tighten up the editing.

  3. Do you think the ratings will continue to be strong David? Or was the curiosity factor too much of a driver? Will viewers leave to Lego Masters come premiere? Thanks!

  4. Well done 10. I always get excited when 10 does well in the ratings. The underdog has done well. Good job opening with Gordon Ramsay. Smart move. And also taking the opportunity to introduce new judges with bringing back much loved contestants so we ‘will’ tune in. I have followed Poh for years and I am sure many viewers will have their own favourites who have drawn them back in. Clearly #iso has helped but well done. I predict even if LM pips it next week MCA will hold good numbers and may do well on encore episodes or streaming later for those double dipping between the two. I hope 10 brings back HYBPA? in a varied iso format as a double header on Monday nights as winter sets in. Will do extremely well in the ratings having these two back to back.

    1. HYBPA is coming back soon! There was an ad for it last night during Masterchef. Looks as though it will be from home though via video link etc. Can’t wait though!

    2. Has there been any update on what is happening with HYBPA, David, if you don’t mind me asking? Usually it returns alongside MasterChef but obviously that had to change this year. Thanks.

  5. It is great to see all the love for 10 and the risk of new judges and returning faves has worked. I think Lego will challenge and beat 10 next week, but I am hoping 10 can keep up this momentum and do well.
I was interested to watch as I have only seen one launch series and didn’t like the previous males judges eating all the time. But I forgot and was overseas last year and missed Lego Masters.

  6. Thats how u do it!!! Well done 10 thrilled for them!!! Hope the continue to hover around 1 million. This is great and also the caliber of contestants is amazing. Cant believe the likes lf poh and hayden are back. I wish marion came back but i know she has a newborn!

  7. Well deserved, such a great first episode. Perfect mix of nostalgia with the contestants and new judges and the standard of food being so high as well. Plus, the feel good nature of the show is so needed right now.

  8. Everyone at Ch 10 & Endemol Shine deserve huge congratulations – this was an absolute masterclass in how to relaunch a show and it paid off.
From the decision to make it (effectively) an all stars season, to that opener (ngl, I got quite teary during that), to having Gordon Ramsay act pretty much as the host while we get to know the new judges and they settle in, to launching it on Easter Monday – everything has been 100%.
And in these uncertain times it’s so lovely to have a show that is so positive and warm – it’s like being back with family.

  9. Just as I predicted, ratings up on past seasons. Judges were great, food was awesome and contestants engaging. The positivity is just what we at the moment.

  10. Opening production values were excellent. Great decision to have Gordon there to make up for the new judges lack of hosting experience. The new judges will get better over the next few weeks. Well done 10…Just hope the success continues. The longevity of Masterchef in this generation of TV is just amazing!

    1. Yeah and House Rules was down on the corresponding week last year for a Monday which was then 640,000. Though noting House Rules started 3 weeks early this year and it was also Easter Monday this year and not last. So I would say trying to get the jump on other shows hasn’t worked for Seven with House Rules and could be in real trouble once Lego Masters returns.

  11. It is extra impressive for 10 to win the overall night when they have less multi channels than 7 and 9. Masterchef was terrific last night. It’s the kind of feel good show we need right now.

  12. Masterchef a new era…very well done…I loved everything about it….
And gosh…those numbers for the nightly news….the networks must be beside themselves..

  13. Will be interesting to see if Lego Masters will premiere higher than 1 million this Sunday. I also condemn Nine’s decision to air Informer 3838 after Lego Masters at 8.45 on Monday with Lego rated PG with Informer rated MA15+. Hope they at least put an ad break between the shows to give families the opportunity to change channel or switch off.

    1. Lego will go up from last year I reckon. The playfulness, the self-isolation, family appeal, strength of S1 will all lead to an increase. It’s just a question of whether it can overtake Masterchef (both same production co).

      1. By the looks of things MasterChef could beat Lego Masters given it’s premiered with over 1.2 million viewers, huge win for 10 and exactly what they need with a lot of their other productions affected. Do you know if the Bachelor and Masked Singer are going to be ready in time David? Thanks

  14. It was pretty good but it just wasn’t the same without Matt Gary and George one thing I didn’t miss was George shouting 30 seconds i will keep watching it will be interesting to see how the ratings go

    1. Proves the show is about the food and the format not the personalities on it. I personally felt the show did not miss the past judges. Sure we come to know them well but we will do the same with these new judges as well. Let’s us not forget we never heard of Gary, George or Matt Prior to MC starting. Having past contestants is a clever way of getting the public use to the new judges.

  15. Loved last night’s Masterchef! So refreshing to watch something other than the news. Nice that the new judges were not the sole focus of the show and interesting to see how far the past contestants have progressed.

  16. I knew this was going to be a hit! Well done 10. Self-isolation definitely helped, and the atmosphere of the show is a perfect juxtaposition of where our world is at currently, great escapism. Only critique is I felt Ramsey did a lot of the heavy lifting last night. His presence I felt was heavily relied upon and therefore we didn’t get to see as much of the new judges shine through. But then again its only episode one.

    Good work Channel 10

  17. I had a strong feeling Masterchef would reach 1.2 Mill, and I’m so glad it did, correct me if I’m wrong but is this the highest launch numbers for a reality show so far in 2020? If so then it really is heart warming to see people watch a show that isn’t corrupt by drama or falseness. I didn’t even mind that the judges weren’t there I think the 3 of them did fantastic last night, the show has proved it can really stand on it’s own two feet.
