International drama The New Pope begins its Free to Air broadcast tonight.
Created and directed by Paolo Sorrentino with Umberto Contarello and Stefano Bises, the series is a successor to The Young Pope.
It screened on SBS in January.
John Malkovich and Jude Law star in Paolo Sorrentino’s stunning vision for the world of the modern papacy. Pius XIII (Law) is in a coma. Succeeding him is the charming and moderate English aristocrat Sir John Brannox (Malkovich) with the name John Paul III. Quickly, the new pope realises it won’t be easy to replace Pius XIII, who has become a Saint with thousands of faithful followers now idolising him.
Series One, Episode One:
Pius XIII is in a coma and Voiello manages to have a new Pope elected. Tommaso Viglietti is apparently easy to manipulate, while in actual fact, he wants to donate the riches of the Vatican to the needy.
10:55pm tonight on SBS.

Thank you. I’ve been waiting for this announcement for a while. ‘The Young Pope’ had such a dream like feel to the series. Intrigued if this will too.
Very late timeslot for a series with major stars of both Hollywood and European cinema.
Because it has been at SBS on Demand since Jan. Not saying I agree with the strategy, but that’s the reasoning.
Standard for a show with subtitles though.
