Organised crime drama ZeroZeroZero, starring Gabriel Byrne and Andrea Riseborough, will screen on SBS from mid May.

Filmed in six countries across three continents, it explores the consequences and contradictions of globalisation through the drug trade.

The series includes six languages – English, Spanish, Italian, French, Wolof and Arabic – with English subtitles. The Italian produced series premiered internationally in February.

SBS Director of Television and Online Content, Marshall Heald, said: “We’ve been waiting a long time to bring this series to Australian audiences. ZeroZeroZero is gritty and emotional, but it’s also incredibly fast-paced and entertaining. With three directors from three different countries, the series is a multi-faceted and multilingual drama that we know viewers are going to love. At SBS, we scour the entire globe for fresh new international series that broaden Australia’s worldview, and we’re thrilled to be premiering ZeroZeroZero next month.”

The full series will also drop at SBS on Demand.

The series boasts a renowned international cast including celebrated Irish actor and Golden Globe Award winner Gabriel Byrne (Hereditary, The Usual Suspects), award-winning British actress Andrea Riseborough (Birdman, Bloodline), American star Dane DeHaan (Valerian and the City of A Thousand Planets, The Amazing Spiderman 2) and Mexican actor Harold Torres (El Chapo).

From acclaimed directors Stefano Sollima (Gomorrah, Sicario: Day of the Soldado), Pablo Trapero (The Clan) and Janus Metz (True Detective, Armadillo), and writers Leonardo Fasoli (Gomorrah) and Mauricio Katz (Maniac), ZeroZeroZero is the result of over three years of research and interviews.

It explores globalisation through a unique and unexplored perspective, offering viewers a fascinating portrait of cocaine. “ZeroZeroZero” flour is the finest, whitest available. Among narcotraffickers, it is also the nickname for the purest cocaine on the market.

The series follows the journey of a cocaine shipment, from the moment a powerful Italian cartel purchases it, to its packaging in Mexico and shipment across the Atlantic Ocean. Its journey is followed until reaching its final delivery and payment in Europe.

An epic power struggle is sparked among the most powerful bosses in the hierarchy of international organised crime – their lives and livelihoods hang in the balance.

  1. Scottish band Mogwai have released their soundtrack for “ZeroZeroZero” which (like most of their work) is very fine indeed, perhaps almost matching the quality of the “Les Revenants” soundtrack they did some years ago now.

  2. The SBS have been doing extraordinarily well with their choice of new shows recently, I’m sure this must be getting noticed by the pay TV SVOD competition, I hope the SBS can keep it up.
