Gogglebox late but 10 wins Thursday

Ratings: A Masterclass bumps Gogglebox to a late slot, but kept viewers on 10 all night.

A very late screening of Gogglebox rankled some viewers last night but the combo with MasterChef / Masterclass helped 10 to win the night.

MasterChef Australia was the night’s top entertainment at 1.03m viewers and topped the demos, well in front of 7:30 (655,000), RBT (534,000), Secrets of the Tower of London (309,000), Billy Connolly: Great American Trail (270,000) and The Heights (269,000).

Later the first MasterChef Masterclass led with 802,000 easily trumping Grand Designs Australia (406,000), movie: Contagion (310,000), movie: Spectre (309,000) and Barrie Cassidy’s One Plus One (214,000).

The 100th episode of Gogglebox didn’t finish until 10:45pm but drew an impressive 601,000 -down on last week’s bumper 874,000.

10 network won Thursday with 27.1% then Nine 26.0%, Seven 23.8%, ABC 15.2% and SBS 7.9%.

The Project was 636,000 / 459,000 for 10. 10 News First drew 513,000 / 338,000.

Nine News was best for Nine at 1.17m / 1.05m. A Current Affair pulled 798,000 and Hot Seat was 599,000 / 351,000.

Seven News was #1 at 1.28m / 1.2m. The Chase (690,000 / 419,000) and Home and Away (661,000) followed.

ABC News (914,000) led its slot for ABC. Sammy J (429,000), The Drum (261,000) and The Cult of the Family (90,000) comprised ABC’s night.

  1. Agree, enjoy gogglebox and love Keith and Lee. Really enjoyed masterchef, loved the masterclass and actually watched the encore of secrets and lies. I think I may be back to watch the next episode next week.

  2. So pleased MCA is maintaining great viewing results. No airs and graces with the new and fresh Judges.
Gogglebox was at one of its funniest last night, really enjoying it again and soon it’s going to be over boo hoo. Although, we find Mum Kerry is nasty and negative. Even her mum said on the phone to her granddaughter that Kerry was never happy! Don’t we know it! Loved Anastacia & Faye having a mini domestic and of course Patrick Delpechitra is so entertaining, even his wife gave him a serve last night. Thank you Gogglebox!

    1. I agree….re the judges….they know what they are doing….and yes…no ego’s….Love it….
Gogglebox is just wonderful viewing….who knew it would….not me ?

  3. Gogglebox would be appointment viewing if Ten cared enough about the show and its viewers to give it a consistent timeslot. I went back to streaming when it wasn’t on when I tuned in at 8.40pm.

    1. You have to wonder if there is a requirement in their contract with Foxtel to screen it after 8:30pm – it would wipe the floor if it could screen at 7:30pm Thursdays.

The move would require a rethink of some their reality calendar though (e.g. Survivor and Batchelor screening in the same week, although Batchelor could become a more raunchy 8:30pm show?)

      1. I don’t believe so. We know from Masterchef being 7:30 Sundays that 10 prefers the same time every night (although Seven and Nine audiences don’t seem to have any problem). Oddly, moving Masterclass to 7:30 Friday would have been time consistent and kept Gogglebox consistent.

  4. Nine News Melbourne has widened lead over Seven lately after numbers got very close late last year.
David, I can’t recall either network claiming the year. Who actually won 2019?

  5. Ten seemed to be in damage control at their earlier decision to push Gogglebox back late, promos during 10 News First omitted the timeslot, just displaying “tonight after Masterchef” (earlier in the week they had shown 9:45pm Thursday in the end frame, although but not stated with the voiceover).

Next, viewers of Masterchef had to endure a solid “Next” watermark displayed for the entire show, which animated into a larger “don’t go anywhere, Gogglebox Next” banner every 10 minutes or so for the first hour.

  6. Really impressive numbers for Gogglebox considering the nearly 11.00pm finish!

I think 10 are absolutely bonkers for airing it so late given how well it performed last week.

Does it matter if the Masterclass episodes are aired after Thursday night’s episode? (I assume they have no bearing on the outcome of the competition) If not, they should have scheduled it at 8.30pm Tuesday instead of the NCIS repeat.

    1. It would have had to been held over to next week though as it referred to the Wednesday night mystery box. Or alternatively, they could have split it to show two-thirds Tuesday and only screened that segment last night, with Gogglebox on by 9:10pm or so.

  7. As annoyed as I am about Gogglebox being late, 10 knows the ratings for Masterclass will be higher on Thursday than if they put on 7.30 Friday. its alright, i just watched the recording from Wednesday at the usual time

  8. I’m surprised 10 bumped Gogglebox to that time slot given it’s one of their only other high rating prime time shows currently. They should consider moving the Masterclass to Fridays and replace the Graham Norton repeats.

    1. No chance, not with a lead-in of 1m+ for the same show into Master class and what stellar ratings for a master class too! It’s not on every single Thursday and Gogglebox later at night ensured 10 won the night, even the network!

      1. They won the night last week with Gogglebox on at 8:45pm and would’ve done the same without masterclass.
They have a chance to rate on Fridays against no football and potentially have a show they can put at 7:30, but if it’s a bigger win on a Thursday they want to secure on a Thursday only, then so be it

  9. I stayed to the end of Gogglebox to see the You Can’t Ask That/HIV+ discussion – its a pity they left that to the end of the show, as I think a lot of people would have switched off (especially after Anastacia’s Greek vs Italy ranting).
