Renewed: Locke & Key

Netflix supernatural horror gets a second season.

Locke & Key has been renewed for a second season by Netflix.

The supernatural horror is based on the comic book franchise of the same name by Joe Hill and Gabriel Rodriguez.

It revolves around three siblings, Tyler (Connor Jessup), Kinsey (Emilia Jones) and Bode (Jackson Robert Scott), who, after the gruesome murder of their father, move to their ancestral home in Massachusetts only to find the house has magical keys that give them a vast array of powers and abilities.

“We are thrilled to be continuing the journey of Locke & Key alongside all of our amazing collaborators,” said Co-showrunners Carlton Cuse and Meredith Averill in a statement.

“We are grateful to Netflix for all their support, especially at this difficult time, and look forward to bringing you the exciting next chapter of our story.”

  1. Series showrunner Meredith Averill has claimed they are preferring the “suspense and tension” over “gory and graphic” when it comes to horror. She said the second season would retain the first season’s tone – but with the kids getting older and also more experienced with the keys and their powers, the topics, situations, and enemies they face will have to grow and deepen. Personally, this is disappointing because the graphic novel regularly shocked and created palpable tension with each page. And whilst I personally struggle with gore, this series definitely needs a splash of it to be true to the source material. I was really hoping for more Lovecraftian scares in the second season.

  2. Locke & Key did have a story arc designed for a long running serial, whether this could mean that Locke & Key will become a Netflix regular we will have to wait and see, Netflix may be looking at their production budgeting.
