Social Distance anthology for Netflix

Cast to film themselves in isolation for new series from Jenji Kohan.

This one will surely depend on how quickly it can be turned around….

Netflix has announced an isolation anthology, Social Distance from Jenji Kohan (Orange is the New Black, Weeds, GLOW).

The series will focus on the “new, bizarre, bewildering reality we are all experiencing” during the COVID-19 pandemic. It will be scripted and shot with crews working remotely and talent will film themselves.

“We feel passionate about finding connection as we all remain at a distance,” producers said in a press release. “We’ve been inspired to create an anthology series that tells stories about the current moment we are living through — the unique, personal, deeply human stories that illustrate how we are living apart, together. We are challenging ourselves to do something new: To create and produce virtually so that our cast and crew can stay healthy and safe.

“The experience of social distancing is currently universal, but no individual story is the same. Through a broad spectrum of tales and moments, some seismic and some mundane, we hope to capture a moment in time. And we hope that Social Distance will help people feel closer to one another.”

Director Diego Velasco will helm the project remotely while showrunner Hilary Weisman Graham runs production from her living room. Graham, Jenji Kohan, Tara Herrmann, and Blake McCormick will executive produce.

  1. This idea is like what’s happening now but on social media, especially by the under employed celebrities and actors who are missing the media attention and former hyperactivity of their lives.
Still this series will be scripted by Jenji who creatively knows her dark comedy stuff, so I expect a suitably quirky slant about COVID-19 self isolation for viewers.
