Stan & Foxtel in HBO bid

Everybody wants HBO premium content.

WarnerMedia, which owns HBO, has given Nine and Foxtel until May to bid for HBO Max content.

Foxtel currently has the exclusive first-run rights to air HBO content for the next two years. But any new deal will also include Warner Bros content.

The Sydney Morning Herald suggests Foxtel was considering working with a free-to-air partner like Seven on some of the content.

Seven sources said discussions were not underway.

HBO also has the option of launching HBO Max in Australia if it isn’t enticed by either proposition, having secured a local trademark.

Meanwhile Foxtel is moving towards its new stand-alone streaming entertainment service codenamed ‘Projects Ares’. The Australian Financial Review today speculated it would be called Binge.

Brian Walsh told Mediaweek, “All the technical infrastructure is built off the back of Kayo. When you think of all the technical innovations Kayo offers, they will also be offered in the new entertainment product.”

A Foxtel spokesman said, “We are on track to launch our new entertainment streaming service by the end of June. With people spending more time at home social distancing we think there will be significant interest in a new, differentiated streaming service with the world’s best content.”

Foxtel currently has partnerships with HBO, FX and BBC while Stan has Showtime, Paramount, Starz and MGM

Stan and Foxtel declined to comment.

  1. HBO Max content would not come cheap. If Stan did get it, you can be virtually guaranteed there would be a price rise for Stan associated with it.

    1. Yeah in the USA they will charging $14.99 per month for the HBO Max Streaming service and if you look back to the story in here about Nine giving up the Warner content due to price and that all being part of HBO Max content, you’d have to assume they want a pretty price.

This kind of seems like a wait out time thing to me though, as is said Foxtel have HBO content for 2 more years, bit like Stan getting Disney content and being left now with Fox and ABC shows and no more Marvel, LucasArts and Pixar ones since Disney+ started.

Of course this may be mainly for all the original content (38 in 2020 and 12 more in 2021):

  2. Will CBS get their Showtime content for 10 All Access? It’s odd that 10 All Access exists when all their premier content is tied up elsewhere…

  3. Kind of hope Stan gets HBO to be honest. Would be great to see the content. I don’t subscribe to Foxtel (i have in the past but it just got too expensive) and never will again. The thing is though, if Stan do get it will they put their prices up? I’ve seen that happen in the past too when new content gets added to subscription services like Netflix that it jumps in price a bit. Will be interesting to see how this goes.

  4. Really hoping Stan gets it. Foxtel is a minimum of $26 a month for limited content and no movies with tons of repeats and ads I have no faith that their streaming service will be any better.

  5. Hope they partner with Stan. Would make Stan more appealing as I find, even though I subscribe, their really good content is lacking compared to Netflix and Amazon.

  6. I would imagine Foxtel really needs HBO to update it’s own content monthly, but finding a partner to help with the deal does indicate some future budget constraints for Foxtel going forward.
HBO is gradually going to go global with it’s streaming service but probably wouldn’t match the subscription take up rate of their billion dollar competition in Australia, so adding themselves onto Foxtel’s ‘Binge’ or whatever, could be a good initial business option.
