US revives Wipeout

As the US looks to entertainment formats, it slides into a familiar game.

Zany obstacle course series Wipeout is getting a revival in the US.

The series, which ran from 2008 – 2014, features contestants competing across a course of giant red balls and water challenges.

An Australian production, hosted by James Brayshaw, Josh Lawson Kelly Landry, was filmed for Nine in Argentina, as one of several international adaptations.

A re-imagined series for TBS will feature new format twists and elements that will push contestants’ athleticism. It now features a “jaw-dropping, three-stage, obstacle course consisting of multiple strategy and decision points designed to further challenge, and wear out, the stamina of the competitors. Returning to the game, an iconic staple with many surprises, are the big red balls, back with a vengeance.”

“In my many years of producing, Wipeout remains my all-time favourite,” said Matt Kunitz, Creator/Showrunner/Executive Producer of the series. “I am thrilled that it is returning more competitive than ever, while continuing to provide hilarious wipeouts. ‘Wipeout’ is a rare show loved by both kids and adults, a true co-viewing experience. With a strong focus on comedy, there is no better network for Wipeout‘s return than TBS.”

“We are thrilled to be bringing back everyone’s favorite obstacle course competition with the team at TBS,” said Sharon Levy, President, Unscripted & Scripted Television, Endemol Shine North America. “This show has truly become a global phenomenon and its popularity has continued to grow over the last decade with a new generation of viewers. We have some really unique, fun new twists planned for this version and we can’t wait to get into production.”

  1. If they keep it as a fun show where entertaining viewers for an hour is the priority I wish it well.

If they try and make it a competitive athlete based show, as they did in the final US season, and forget what made it a success in the first place well then it deserves to fail.

  2. The US version, like Gladiators, was soooooooooooo much better than our local one. Our commentary etc was way too nice (UK Gladiators was even worse) and therefore missed the point of the show.

  3. I used to love this show! Very happy it’s been revived!

I was quite unsure as to why it was cancelled any the ABC in 2015! They never really gave a reason!
