Airdate: Perry Mason

Reimagined legal series Perry Mason, starring Matthew Rhys, will screen same time as the US on FOX Showcase in June.

The HBO series also stars John Lithgow (Dexter, The Crown, Bombshell), as E.B. Jonathan, a personal attorney at the lowest point in his career and a semi-regular employer of Perry Mason. Tatiana Maslany (Orphan Black) plays Sister Alice, the leader of the Radiant Assembly of God.

Chris Chalk, Shea Whigham, Juliet Rylance, Nate Corddry, Veronica Falcon, Jefferson Mays, Gayle Rankin, Lili Taylor, Andrew Howard, Robert Patrick and Stephen Root also feature.

Set in 1931 Los Angeles, the series focuses on the origins of American fiction’s most legendary criminal defence lawyer Perry Mason, based on Erle Stanley Gardner’s novels. Living as a low-rent private investigator, Mason is haunted by his wartime experiences in France and suffering the effects of a broken marriage.

L.A. is booming while the rest of the country recovers from the Great Depression – but a kidnapping gone very wrong leads to Mason exposing a fractured city as he uncovers the truth of the crime.

Timothy Van Patten – whose directing credits include the Game of Thrones pilot along with episodes of The Sopranos, Boardwalk Empire, Sex and the City, The Wire, The Pacific, Rome and Deadwood – directs and executive produces the series.
