Alan Partridge tops list of UK’s greatest comedy characters

Is Steve Coogan's alter-ego Britain's greatest comedy character?

Everybody loves a list….

Retro British TV channel Gold has named their list of the UK’s greatest comedy characters.

Steve Coogan’s alter-ego Alan Partridge emerged as the #1 choice.

The deciding list was based on both public and panel polling.

Even presuming it’s a TV-only list (sorry Charlie Chaplin), it leaves out big names including Alf Garnett, both Steptoe & Son, Mr. Humphries & Mrs. Slocombe from Are You Being Served?, Blakey from On the Buses, and Little Britain. Patsy Stone from Ab Fab made it to #26.

1.  Alan Partridge
2. Del Boy (Only Fools And Horses)
3. David Brent (The Office)
4. Blackadder
5. Basil Fawlty (Fawlty Towers)
6. Fleabag
7. Rick (The Young Ones)
8. Fletcher (Porridge)
9. Victor Meldrew (One Foot In The Grave)

    1. For me it’s the fact they get to do these outlandish things, they get to be sarcastic, they can speak their minds without fear of offending anyone, they can be blunt and downright rude. Things I and others have to suppress in our lives. I would love to fly into a rage like Malcolm Tucker, it would be cathartic.
