What I’ve Been Watching: Lisa Millar

"I would love to be on Dancing with the Stars" says News Breakfast host.

News Breakfast host Lisa Millar has a secret wish to appear on Dancing with the Stars and she loves to watch The Chase.

Here’s what else she told TV Tonight she has been watching lately…

What shows are on your must-see TV list lately?
LM: Loads of good stuff at the moment. Billions, After Life, Ozark, Succession, Schitt’s Creek (I’m a late adopter), The Marvelous Mrs Maisel, The Last Dance on Netflix about Michael Jordan and the Chicago Bulls. Our sports presenter Paul Kennedy told me it was a ‘must watch’. He’s our resident nerd when it comes to ‘80s movies so I thought I’d take a punt on his advice on this one. I actually saw Michael Jordan play in Washington DC when he signed with the Wizards and that was pretty amazing (except I didn’t have my glasses so it was all a bit of a blur – but I was there, I swear!)

How has lockdown affected your viewing?
LM: I’ve started watching day time television! I never used to even though I finish work by 10am and have a good chunk of the day to myself before I have to read up on the next morning’s program. BC (Before Coronavirus) I’d play tennis or go bike riding or walking (or have a long lunch or two) after work but with enforced isolation I’ve definitely been watching more TV. And on the scale of ‘crap to classic’  I’ve gravitated towards just watching what I’d normally classify as ‘crap.’

Which guilty pleasure show are you reluctant to admit to watching?
LM: Nothing I feel guilty about watching but I doubt many of my friends know how much I love The Chase. I used to watch it with mum when I’d come home on holidays when I was working overseas for the ABC. Mum isn’t with us anymore – but The Chase is. She was an enabler! And now I can’t resist.

When you settle down for a night on the couch what are your ‘must-haves?’
LM: If I settle down for a night on the couch during the week then something’s gone wrong! I go to bed at 8pm for a 3am wakeup. On the weekends if I’m watching tv then it’s probably a wine. I’ve also got into the bad habit of keeping my iPad close by and playing online scrabble with my brother and sister in Queensland while I’m watching TV which means I’m not concentrating and I end up losing.

What show you would secretly love to appear on?
LM: Easiest question to answer – I would love to be on Dancing with the Stars – because I can’t dance and I love watching the transformation that occurs. When I lived in London I was addicted to their version of it called Strictly Come Dancing.

How are you enjoying News Breakfast, and what has surprised you most?
LM: I love News Breakfast. The biggest surprise is how quickly three hours of live television whizzes by, especially if there’s lots of news and great guests. Sometimes I’ll get a coffee brought in at 7am and it’s cold by the time I get to it. No ads to give me caffeine time!

News Breakfast airs 6am weekdays on ABC / ABC News.

  1. Good to see your interview with Lisa featuring in some banter on the couch this morning with her and Michael.
Hopefully Lisa’s interest in DWTS has caught the attention of the powers that be at Warners if it returns next year.

  2. I watch more often now that Lisa is on – she brings a much calmer air to the show which doesn’t overshadow Michael. I think he finds her good value as well. Certainly smiles a lot more and her confidence has grown a lot.

  3. Agree with both earlier comments on Lisa Millar and News Breakfast. I thought Virginia Trioli (who Lisa replaced) would be a hard act to follow as she was so good and had such a fantastic partnership with Michael Rowland. Luckily, Lisa has been excellent as well and there’s an easy, smooth chemistry with Michael, which in two-handed breakfast programs is so key to their success, I think.

  4. She’s good value Lisa ,enjoyed her reporting from the US of A and she’s good on the couch with Michael , they’re a good pair.
