ABC, SBS audio description: guide

From June 28 blind & visually impaired audiences will welcome new ways to enjoy ABC & SBS.

As announced last December, ABC and SBS is adding audio description to selected programming for blind and audiences with impaired vision.

Audio description (AD) is the auditory narration of the non-verbal elements of a program. During gaps in dialogue, it describes visual elements such as scenes, settings, actions and costumes.

This is long overdue in Australia and follows previous trials by public broadcasters.

SBS is currently offering this for select programming now ahead of a larger offering on SBS and SBS VICELAND programming ongoing from 28th June.

ABC’s trial will begin from Sunday 7 June with a full AD service launch on Sunday 28 June, 2020.

  1. Just checked the TVs in our house with the movie Pride that’s on SBS now, and they’re audio-description compatible, which is great.
