AFL delivers bumper Seven share

Ratings: AFL cracks the magic million as it ends in a draw and Seven reaches for the record book.

AFL is back.

A nail-biting Collingwood v Richmond match cracked the magic million last night at 1.00m viewers across Seven and 7mate. In Melbourne alone there were 668,000 viewers.

Seven cites this as the biggest regular primetime match in a decade. It topped the demos and ensured a huge network share. The game began with a bending of the knee for the Black Lives Matter movement, featured fake crowd noise and cardboard cutout fans, ending in a draw -the first between the clubs since 1917.

By comparison NRL drew 372,000 in 2 cities on Nine. It should be noted another 16,000 watched on 9GEM which Nine still codes separately. Why?

MasterChef Australia was the top entertainment drawcard at 875,000 viewers, down on last Thursday’s 970,000.

7:30 (426,000), Great American Railroad Journeys (231,000) and The Heights (180,000) followed.

Seven network won Thursday with 36.6% then Nine 22.6%, 10 20.3%, ABC 12.3% and SBS 8.1%.

Seven News was #1 at 1.1m / 1.05m for Seven. The Chase drew 641,000 / 404,000 while Home and Away was 405,000 in 3 cities.

Nine News was best for Nine at 980,000 / 907,000. A Current Affair was 698,000 then Hot Seat 570,000 / 354,000.

The Project drew 516,000 / 341,000 for 10. Celebrity Gogglebox USA debuted to 462,000 then 10 News First (382,000 / 289,000) and Law and Order: SVU (176,000).

ABC News won its slot at 722,000 for ABC. Sammy J (342,000), Grand Designs Australia (289,000), The Drum (219,000), and Father Brown (185,000) followed.

On SBS it was Filthy Rich & Homeless (224,000), SBS World News (157,000), Mastermind (97,000) and ZeroZeroZero (69,000).

    2. If you look over in the Ratings section you will find 7Mate topped the secondary channels with the AFL and that was for Sydney, Brisbane and Perth at 216,000, so Seven main was Melbourne and Adelaide only and 786,000.

  3. Interesting – first time for awhile where NRL and AFL on the same night, AFL no. 3, NRL at no. 19 – almost 3 times more viewing and also beating NRL on foxtel. Why can’t ch9 be consistent and include secondaries – sometimes they do, sometimes they don’t.

    1. No. I do post weekend preliminary for reader benefit, but OzTAM updates by Monday and it is coded separately. Sorry if confusing, I could hold off publishing until Monday but I don’t think that’s what readers want either. Nine codes them separately, and is something I have raised.

  5. Outside Syd + Bris NRL doesn’t get a look in, similar to AFL in NSW + QLD.
    Unlike 7 ch9 aren’t that desperate for minor ratings.
    7 are big on the combined results to look better ? great example.. 3 Sat. games combined
    (2 of the 3 games generally are weaker games of the round) taking higher average each metro
    relates to higher total – Fox figures show each individual figure (less impressive)

    1. And a different game for AFL as curiosity played in because Sydney (52,000) and Brisbane (41,000) are quite a bit higher than normal, Perth was also on 7Mate (123,000), so that helped take Number one spot on secondaries (216,000) with 7Mate on 5.4%.

      *Last year Sydney was 29,000, Brisbane 23,000, Perth 70,000, so yeah better figures and on two Melbourne Teams, likely won’t get that much after this for non same state teams (tonight maybe but wouldn’t expect it), 7Mate wasn’t far off last year either on 5.3% with lower numbers in those states.

    3. If Channel 9 aren’t that interested in their total range of channels, that seems a bit shortsighted to me?

  6. Could be another bumper AFL one tonight as well, as it’s Geelong vs Hawthorn the traditional Easter Monday clash plus the first time Hawthorn has met Geelong at their home ground in 14 years. Was Round 3: 2006 when the Hawks defeated Geelong by 52 points, so given that huge rivalry and that their games are never really over until the final siren it may be huge as I say.
