Filthy, Rich and Homeless doing it tough

Ratings: SBS series has an uphill battle to attract viewers when reality shows are fighting it out.

While a nation is hooked on cooking and locked-up reality stars, a series about homelessness is doing it tough.

A third season of SBS series Filthy, Rich and Homeless drew 272,000 last night, trailing others in its timeslot. That’s down on its first season which drew numbers around the 350,000 mark. But it’s also a big ask to attract eyeballs when reality juggernauts don’t finish till around the 9 – 9:15pm.

Once again MasterChef Australia led in entertainment at 975,000 and topped the demos. Big Brother was 748,000 for the bulk of its show rising to 805,000 for its eviction.

Julia Zemiro’s Home Delivery (555,000), 7:30 (524,000), and Taronga: Who’s Who in the Zoo? (412,000) all followed.

Later The Weekly drew 532,000 then The Front Bar (418,000), Paramedics (415,000), At Home Alone Together (359,000) and newcomer Tommy (358,000).

Seven network won Wednesday with 28.6% then Nine 24.7%, 10 21.6%, ABC 15.9% and SBS 9.2%.

Seven News was #1 at 1.17m / 1.12m for Seven then The Chase (677,000 / 405,000) and Home and Away (692,000)

Nine News was best for Nine at 1.04m / 973,000 then A Current Affair (701,000) and Hot Seat (574,000 / 354,000). Botched was 282,000.

The Project was 577,000 / 374,000. 10 News First drew 423,000 / 293,000.

ABC News won its slot at 778,000. Planet America (302,000), The Drum (202,000) and The Last Leg (144,000).

On SBS it was Tony Robinson’s World By Rail (284,000), Filthy Rich and Homeless (217,000), SBS World News (173,000) and Mastermind (124,000). Reprisal was just 66,000.

Bluey led multichannels at 245,000.

Sunrise: 287,000
Today: 216,000
News Breakfast: 161,000 / 52,000

  1. Tommy was really watchable and gets a great lead in from MC, but it will never win its slot against the Front Bar (FB). Perhaps 10 should put the NCIS repeat up against FB on Wednesdays and give Tommy some clean air at 8.40 on Tuesdays…

  2. I think I reckognise just one of the “celebrities” on offer so whoever signed off on this largely unknown cast needs to go back to the drawing board. It’s just same same now …nothing new to see here.

  3. Okay three episodes in and I’m really enjoying BB a lot more than i thought i would. I grew up watching it from season 1 all the way through so I am missing some aspects to it. I wish they showed the votes to evict however seeing the nominations are still fun. Needed Mike Goldman narrating(next year maybe?) because Sonya doesn’t cut it sorry. BB’s voice I actually really like, more than the older ones. His dryness and deadpan narrating of the challenges is too good. I think it really adds an interesting ingredient to the show. The house looks great, the backyard could be a bit bigger. I thought I would hate the whole challenges thing but they’ve been pretty entertaining. Then the fallout from nominations gets very juicy especially last night. Just needs some more “down time” chit chat shown which I thought ep3 had more of. Also, where’s my BB theme music!?

  4. FR&H has lost viewers because S2 and S3 are just formulaic copies of S1, with the celebrity of the celebrities decreasing each time. If you have watched one you will learning nothing from wasting 3 hours watching another one. It was worth doing once to raise awareness, but as homelessness tourism it isn’t ever going to make money for SBS.

    1. Agree fatigue is an issue, and casting not as strong. Personally S1 made me donate to homelessness a lot more after having the issues aired. Like Go Back or Struggle Street there is a life span at which you do have to ask if there is more to offer, but I hope the post has given it some further oxygen.

    2. I must admit I watched the first season and thought it was a great idea and show. I ended up buying two ‘Backpack Bed’s’ for the homeless and i’m sure others did too, which is a good thing. I watched a bit of season 2 and agree it was essentially the same thing, so lost interest and stopped watching. Maybe it has run its race and it’s time for a new idea to help bring attention to the homeless.
