Friday Flashback: Chartbusting ’80s

With Channel 31 closing time to look back on boisterous host Josie Parrelli.

With Channel 31 Melbourne closing on Tuesday, time to look back on just one of its memorable shows, Chartbusting ’80s.

The show was presented by boisterous host Josie Parrelli from 2000 – 2007, a mix of clips, live performances, interviews and studio audience. The M rated show also featured music journalist Jeff Jenkins being mercilessly tormented.

Parrelli once told Theatre People, “…I loved every second of it – I’ve never formally trained in the industry, my background was working as a hairdresser in Perth with dreams of working in the industry – when I moved to Melbourne I had an idea of doing an 80s music show and pitched it to a production house affiliated with Channel 31 – without Channel 31 I would have been another creative person with an idea and no arena to showcase my work  – as all artists will know finding a base and platform gives you something to build upon, this is something we need to maintain and preserve.

Chartbusting ’80s opened so many doors and has given me opportunities I could of only ever dreamed of – it continues to inspire me to continue on the path I’m on, focusing and believing in what I do, putting my ideas forward, investing in my dreams no matter whether it is successful or not.”

Channel 31 signs off on Tuesday night after some 25 years on air.

  1. The schedule for the final night of C31 here in Melbourne is now on my EPG:
    1800-2200 Last Night Live
    2200-2400 Fishcam

Yes, C31 will finish up with fishes with the (in)famous Fishcam being the last show on community television in Melbourne, first live broadcast of Fishcam in a number of years.

  2. Chartbusting 80s was a great show. My old band appeared on that show, plus Asylum, 1700 and Russ Kellett’s Melbourne. Sadly there’s no music programs on ABC, SBS, and the commercial networks to support Aussie music like community television does

  3. Its sad that Melbourne will lose its community television channel on Tuesday. There is a saying that you don’t know what you miss until its gone, and I feel that this will be the feeling in Melbourne on Wednesday.
