Renewed: Big Brother

Casting for 2021 season of Seven reality series is now open.

Seven has confirmed rumours that new reality show Big Brother has been renewed, which takes the series to 13 Australian seasons, across three networks.

Sonia Kruger will return as host for the Endemol Shine series. The renewal also comes just three weeks after the show’s debut.

“It’s been fantastic to reunite Big Brother with his fans and see a whole new generation of Australians fall in love with the show. He’ll be back cheekier than ever so our new housemates better be ready to play. Big Brother is about to go to the next level and I’m totally here for it!” she said.

Network Programming Director Angus Ross said: “Big Brother is a television super brand and this season has been embraced by audiences around Australia. It’s the most talked about show in Australia, as well as being the most streamed – and a genuine social media phenomenon. We’re excited to be working with Endemol Shine Australia – who produce some of the best TV in the country – to deliver a new season of the reimagined Big Brother to Australian viewers.”

Endemol Shine Australia’s Chief Content Officer Peter Newman said: “We’re extremely proud that Seven has commissioned us to deliver another series of the reality show that started it all, Big Brother. We’re also very grateful to the fans of the show who have embraced the evolution of this incredible format. In 2021 Big Brother will be back more mischievous and devious than ever before. You won’t believe what he’s got planned for the Big Brother house.”

A live finale will decide which of the final three housemates will win the title of Big Brother 2020 and a $250,000 prize.

  1. I might sound like a broken record but some things bear repeating. The challenges should form Friday Night Games, not every episode. Bring back daily up-to-date shows. Bring back live evictions. Bring back the social experiment that made the original run on Ten so great. That’s all we want.

I’ve enjoyed this series more than I expected, but it’s just not Big Brother.

  2. Ok, confession time. I have always been vocally anti-Big Brother. I stand by the old versions being amongst the worst TV ever created…but I have gotten hooked into this new incarnation. I suppose the talk in these pages about it being reinvented like a ‘Survivor in a house’ got me intrigued. The personality of the Big Brother voice and how he plays off housemates (especially the delightful Angela) is hilarious. The episodes are a bit too long though and I don’t want more than three per week but still, Endemol have converted me with their reinvention. (I actually watch it secretly when my boyfriend isn’t around).

  3. Apparently they are aiming to film later this year, so it’d be another pre-recorded season, which is a shame.

They need more episodes a week, spread out during the week, but capped at one hour each. The episodes shouldn’t all the be the same format of challenge and eviction. Ideally, the eviction should be voted by the public, but of course, that can’t happen if it’s pre-recorded.

There’s an inherent problem with this format where the outcomes dictate the editing. You’re meant to be observing when watching Big Brother, but now you’re watching narratives crafted by the outcome which is yet to happen.

I am enjoying, but the episodes are too long and we just aren’t getting the meat of what made Big Brother great. Then after Tues it goes away and loses the engagement. I miss that engagement and experience you got with a live on going season.

  4. Agreed. Mike Goldman made it clear he wasn’t approached to be involved until fan backlash got him a 10minute weekly recap on the 7 News website. I miss the old format and after seven episodes, have relentlessly given up on watching.

Maybe a slight name change (eg. Big Brother’s Challenge House) would’ve helped the audience distinguish the different format. Big Brother was always about watching the daily social interactions of the housemates, not who is the best at parlour games.
    Very disappointed.

    1. “…have relentlessly given up on watching”
Sounds like it was an unrelenting and dogged effort to stop watching it. The show wasn’t that bad then? Lol

  5. Im happy about this. A few changes are needed!

I would have 4 eps a week. First ep will be nomination challenge and 3 are put up, then the next night nomination immunity (where the winner can replace themselves with someone else for eviction, followed by the eviction. (This would slow it down abit too as its too fast overall).

Announce the top 2 votes with “its time to go….”

Bring back the opening theme music!!

  6. Not going to happen. Cant live in the pastneeded a refresh and and Seven would be reasonably happy with those numbers considering all the predictions of average viewer numbers ? Still think it will be short lived numbers fell away after the first season on Nine .

  7. They need to go back to the old format. I miss the opening theme song, Mike Goldman’s voice overs & the live evictions. What happened to Mike Goldman? He was always part of Big Brother. Was he unavailable or not even asked?
