Returning: American Idol

US talent show back on Nine after many years off Free to Air.

Season 18 of American Idol will begin next week on Nine as The Voice returns to 3 nights, Sunday – Tuesday.

American Idol has not been on Free to Air for many years, having been on Foxtel, but this season screened from mid February to mid-May in the US (warning: winner info is already freely available online).

The season sees Katy Perry, Luke Bryan, and Lionel Richie returned as judges and Ryan Seacrest as host.

Filming was suspended after the Top 21 were revealed with a further 4 episodes staged remotely.

Networks are understandably light on content due to the pandemic shutdown but while this one is partnered with The Voice, it could have its work cut out to fire in its slot, especially given winner info is evident online…

9:10pm Tuesday July 7 on Nine.

  1. A great series, but such a shame it’s so much later than it originally aired. It seems like a decision only made to plug the pandemic gaps. Hoping it does well for Nine and they consider fast-tracking the next series next year! Or dare I dream, bringing us a homegrown version!

  2. I know that this is just a filler program, and most networks are light on content. But most channels have to try harder with content post 9pm… lol

  3. It is a good series despite the truncated ending. Hopefully Nine might run it same day next year or might even give an Aussie version a go.
