Bugs Bunny turns 80 today.

Bugs Bunny made his official debut on July 27 1940 in Tex Avery’s A Wild Hare. He was first named ‘Happy Rabbit’ before being renamed Bugs Bunny after his original writer, Ben ‘Bugs’ Hardaway. Although Bugs was not the creation of any one man, but the creative talents of perhaps five or six directors and many cartoon writers.

His personality and mannerisms are inspired by the famous likes of Charlie Chaplin, Groucho Marx and Clark Gable among others.

Mel Blanc, voiced Bugs Bunny for nearly 50 years, and his legacy has been carried on by just a small handful of actors, including Jeff Bergman, Billy West, Joe Alaskey, and Eric Bauza.

The Bugs Bunny comic strip ran for almost 50 years from 1943 to 1990. The Bugs Bunny Show which debuted in 1960, was a television staple for over 40 years. Bugs Bunny has appeared in over 175 theatrical shorts, more than any other animated character, and was nominated for three Oscars.

He earned a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1985 and is the only Warner Brothers animated character to have a star. In 1997 he became the first cartoon character on a US postage stamp.

To mark the occasion Boomerang channel has had a month-long Bugs Bunny takeover in July with episodes of The Looney Tunes Show, New Looney Tunes, and Baby Looney Tunes.
