Secrets She Keeps, Hard Quiz launch strong in Europe

Good news for Aussie producers with ratings results from the UK & Netherlands.

Two Aussie-created shows have had strong launches this past week in Europe.

The Secrets She Keeps has become BBC1’s best Monday night drama launch of year. 3.1m viewers tuned into the Lingo Pictures thriller.

It became BBC1’s biggest new Monday night launch of the year so far – even eclipsing Normal People’s 2.2m in April – and the seventh-highest opener of 2020 when all dramas are considered.

Producer Jason Stephens said: “It’s a thrilling result and hopefully it paves the way for more Australian drama to be shown in such a prestigious prime time slot.”

The series which screened here on 10 also skewed younger than the BBC One average, and became the most popular program on the BBC iplayer.

Meanwhile the Dutch version of Hard Quiz, created by Thinkative Television for ABC, won its timeslot on Saturday at 898,000 viewers on NPO 1. By comparison, next in the slot was 486,000 for Talk Nederlands Met Me.

Hard Spel is hosted by Richard Groenendijk.

  1. We’ve just finished binging on the Secrets She Keeps tonight and have to throw bouquettes to the two leads – Jessica De Gouw as Meghan O’Shaughnessy and Michael Dorman as Jack O’Shaughnessy.
Jessica – in particular – was brilliant as Meg, while Dorman cleverly played the emotionally tortured husband. Cinematography was excellent the way it showed Sydneys better side! There have been some top quality Oz dramas that are surely aimed at O/S sales.

  2. Does the ABC make any money out of these international sales? You hear its detractors constantly saying it is wholly funded by taxpayers but if it can get funds through these and home entertainment sales (eg DVD) then surely that’s nothing to sneeze at.
