The Crown casts next Princess Margaret

British actress Lesley Manville will take over from Helena Bonham-Carter in final season.

British actress Lesley Manville will take over the role of Princess Margaret from Helena Bonham-Carter in the final season of The Crown.

She joins the previously-confirmed Imelda Staunton as Queen Elizabeth.

Manville has worked extensively with director Mike Leigh. She is known for Another Year, All or Nothing, Topsy-Turvy and Secrets & Lies and was nominated for an Oscar for her performance in Phantom Thread. TV credits include Mum, Harlots, World on Fire, River, An Adventure in Time & Space and Fleming: The Man Who Would Be Bond.

She will take over the role from Helena Bonham-Carter, who succeeded Vanessa Kirby .

“I could not be happier to be playing Princess Margaret,” Manville said via Twitter. “The baton is being passed on from two formidable actresses, and I really don’t want to let the side down. Furthermore to play siblings with my dear friend Imelda Staunton will be nothing short of a complete joy.”

The show’s fourth season is scheduled to come out later this year, with the fifth and final season due to be shot in 2021.

  1. You get the feeling that The Crown will need to include some single episode updates in the future, especially with the Harry and Meghan saga. The Crown has been a good promotion for Netflix during its start up period, I’m sure they will miss this show as much as the fans will.

  2. What wonderful casting! Two of my favourite actresses. Staunton and Manville. For me their best work has been with Mike Leigh. The former in ‘Vera Drake’ winning her a BAFTA and the latter ‘Another Year’ winning a National Borard of Review. Should be a right royal affair!
