Should The Sound continue?
6 weeks already? ABC music series has made a promising start.

Sunday marks the season final of The Sound, after just 6 weeks.
The series by The Mushroom Group, produced by ex-Seven sports boss Saul Shtein, the show was thrown together quickly during COVID, turning the spotlight onto our musicians.
If I’m honest I haven’t seen too much of the show, but the bits I did see looked terrific:Â drawing upon established talent as a way to leverage new talent. It’s cleverly used guest hosts with Jane Gazzo & Zan Rowe.
In a 5:30 slot and with minimal promotion the numbers have not been strong (last Sunday just 96,000) but while there is no news on more, hopefully this can have a further life and a chance to build.
Here’s what’s in store for the final episode.
- Series One finale brings out the big guns: Tones And I, Guy Sebastian, Bliss n Eso, Vika & Linda, Electric Fields featuring Missy Higgins, Jessica Mauboy & John Butler, Josh Teskey & Ash Grunwald, CXLOE + more
- Tribute to Billy Thorpe and The Aztecs starring: Jimmy Barnes, Chris Cheney (The Living End), Mahalia Barnes, Ben Rodgers, Lachy Doley and Jackie Barnes
- Mondo Rock ‘From The Vault’
- Special guest co-hosts: Keith Urban, Jack Thompson & Molly Meldrum
5:30pm Sunday on ABC.

I have quite enjoyed The Sound especially segments The Vault, weekly tribute and Zan’s music news (which didn’t appear in the final episode). Hopefully there will be another series. Great to see Jane Gazzo back on TV as she was brilliant presenting Recovery with Dylan Lewis.
Yes, agreed that it deserves a chance to return and build on what it’s done so far. Those six weeks flew by, shame this season couldn’t go for longer.
Yes, please.
I thought The Set hosted by Dylan Alcott was meant to be the music show the ABC were after.
The Set was pretty good yes, costs more to make as it is internal.
Then why not have rage fill the 1 hour timeslot for the time being with new releases and some classics from the vault with someone guest hosting from the red couch? That would not cost much at alll to produce with the very small rage production crew.
I’m enjoying it but it needs more promotion. I keep forgetting to watch it live.
A terrific show which felt like a true product of these crazy times but made the most of the limitations. It deserves more episodes and promotion.
I watch it on iview and skip all the hosting parts, going straight to the performances. I agree the genres are broad and prefer watching it this way to zero in on something that appeals to me.
Lisa on Breakfast the other morning referred to Sunday as the final episode of the first series. Not sure if that was from the autocue or if she ad-libbed it. It’s a good show though – hope if continues.
I can’t help but feel music tv is too divisive. While I welcome the attempt, the genre of this show is too broad to maintain interest, for me anyway. Perhaps a more genre specific approach would get better results? A top 40 episode, a rock or metal ep, a hip hop episode and so on.
Errr…’Rage’?
Errr… Rage isn’t live.
You do realize that it’s not actually ‘live’ for any of these music shows-and ‘Rage’ does have live recordings as video clips, depending on availability.
Of course. It’s a program showcasing live music that families can watch together. My parents and I look at The Sound then have dinner.
It’s essentially the same program as The State of Music, a web series that streamed from the Victoria Together Facebook page from the very start of the pandemic. It just switched over to the ABC, which I was thrilled about because it got them a larger platform. That larger platform is exactly what musicians in this country need today. It’s crucial now in the pandemic, when money from streaming and digital downloads is really all they have. But even beyond that, it’s very rare to see Australian music on TV. Especially when we’re talking about emerging artists. Big names are the hook (and even their new material is rarely played on radio these days), but I’ve talked to friends who’ve said they’re discovering new music through this thing. That’s a big essential deal for the arts in Australia.
I agree. It’s a great show and I like the diversity. I don’t want a hip hop, top 40 or golden oldies show. I’m really enjoying it. It’s perfect if you’re a crazy music lover like me.
It is a great show with something for everyone….just lacks promotion and weird time slot…
I usually catch it on iview….they need to give it a chance.
btw…all episodes are on iview….
‘Countdown’ timeslot, a deliberate choice.
Not quite the Countdown slot since it starts at 5.30pm but if they moved Compass from the 6.30pm timeslot, The Sound would be better between 6pm-7pm.
Each weekend, News Corp papers like Herald Sun and The Daily Telegraph have an article previewing that week’s episode of The Sound, usually with a guest artist. But that’s about it.
