The West Wing cast to reunite

Cast to perform together for the first time in nearly two decades, ahead of the US election.

The cast and creators of The West Wing are reuniting to perform together for the first time in nearly two decades, ahead of the US election.

A West Wing Special to Benefit When We All Vote will screen in the US on HBO Max, with a theatrical staging of the “Hartsfield’s Landing” episode from the show’s third season.

To be filmed at the Orpheum Theater in Los Angeles in early October the special is meant to raise awareness for When We All Vote, a non-partisan, nonprofit organisation co-chaired by Michelle Obama.

Rob Lowe, Dulé Hill, Allison Janney, Janel Moloney, Richard Schiff, Bradley Whitford, and Martin Sheen will reprise their roles from the episode, which will be shot under COVID safe protocols..

Series creator Aaron Sorkin will write original material for the event and executive produce along with Thomas Schlamme and Casey Patterson. Schlamme will direct the special.

“Tommy and I are incredibly excited to be getting The West Wing cast back together for this staged reading and to support When We All Vote in their efforts to get all of us involved in this election,” Sorkin said.

The show will also feature guest appearances, including a special message from Obama, among others. Additional cast members and special guests will be announced in the coming weeks.

An Australian broadcaster has not been confirmed, but Foxtel / Binge has a deal for most HBO output.

  1. Great series….interesting timing….wanting everyone to vote….admirable ….a lot of Democrats in the mix…hope this is bi-partisan and not just a push for one party….I cannot help but feel sceptical.

  2. Great to see most of the band back together again. It will be interesting to see if they re-cast the pivotal role of Leo McGarry. Sadly, actor John Spencer died in 2005, during filming of the final season.

  3. This is fantastic news. I am nearly 20 years late to The West Wing party and have been watching it from the start during COVID. Such a great show. Cannot believe I missed it first time around.

  4. Highly unlikely any of the 3 commercial networks would show an interest in this. Fingers crossed ABC or SBS might pick it up otherwise I’ll have to hunt for this by other means. The West Wing is still a personal favourite of mine and currently it’s on a re-watch in my household for the…well I’ve lost count.

  5. A West Wing reboot would work really well.
Preferably done by HBO/FX/Netflix and only 12 eps a season this time.

    Same world – new administration/cast.

    1. In the current climate that is American politics I would like to see Sorkin step out of his comfort zone and apply his wit to having a Republican in the oval office. The last 4 years will provide enough material.

  6. Let’s hope the brilliant teaming again of Sorkin and Schlamme bring about a reboot of some sort. It’s still great TV after all these years no matter what side of US politics you fall on.
