Anna Faris to exit Mom

Star Anna Faris to depart after 7 seasons.

Mom star Anna Faris will exit the Chuck Lorre sitcom ahead of the show’s upcoming eighth season.

“The past seven years on Mom have been some of the most fulfilling and rewarding of my career,” Faris said in a statement. “I’m so thankful to Chuck, the writers, and my amazing castmates for creating a truly wonderful work experience. While my journey as Christy has come to an end, allowing me to pursue new opportunities, I’ll be watching next season and rooting for my TV family.”

Variety suggests Faris wanted to pursue other opportunities,

News of her exit comes just days ahead of the show returning to production on September. 14.

“From the inception of Mom, Anna was the first and only choice for the role of Christy,” Warner Bros. Television, CBS, and Chuck Lorre Productions said in a joint statement. “We are so proud of the stories we have been able to tell during Anna’s seven years with us. We wish Anna all the best, and we thank her for her beautiful portrayal.”

It is unclear exactly how Faris’ character will be written out of the show, but she will not be replaced.

The series also stars Allison Janney, Mimi Kennedy, Jaime Pressly, Beth Hall, William Fichtner and Kristen Johnston.

  1. Oh thanks for that. I’d lost track what season they were up to. They seem to show it in dribs & drabs. They show a few new episodes late at night then it disappears again.

  2. Surely she’ll appear in the season opener (or the first few episodes) in order to give her a proper send-off? (and give the producers/writers time to consider the direction of the show moving forward) It would be a disservice to the audience to suddenly dump her without closure.

I think it’s incredibly foolish of Faris to walk away from a long-running role for which she is top-billed. At best, I would imagine the show running for a few more seasons before it gets the chop anyway. She’s only ever had bit parts in any film worth a damn. I don’t doubt that the role may have cost her a few opportunities, but surely this kind of job security isn’t worth forfeiting for the odd guest stint?

  3. So the show called Mom, will continue with no children for Allison Janey? Thus season eight will be their “jump the shark” season. Which happens to all long running sit-coms when one of their main stars leave.

  4. They are making a mistake not recasting the role. That is why Mom was so funny, the interaction between mother and daughter. I always thought they should have recast Charlie from
two and a half men but they did not and the show was not even half as funny.

    1. Two and a Half Men would have been dead after a season if the recast Charlie and the same goes for this. Recasting a recurring character isn’t too bad but with a lead it is far better to replace that character than to get in another actor and try to have them be the same character which just doesn’t work. The Originals did it with Rebekah and even after being a non lead in s
2 seasons of TVD and a lead for half a season in TO it didn’t work it was just basically another character with the same name. Same goes for Lucifer possesing Sam and Ruby getting a new body in Supernatural. The only time I have ever like recasting was with Meg in Supernatural but that was because Meg was in 5 episodes in season 1 and 2 played as a generic pure evil boring demon before being bought back in season 5 as a more likable character.

      1. I only started watching Mom once they got rid of the family sitcom and made it an odd couple with Christy and Bonnie force to share a house. It’s now largely about Bonnie and Adam and the AA group women, with Janney and Pressly the best actors. And they have introduced Kristen Johnson playing Tammy to clash with Bonnie. I can see why Faris thinks it is time to do something different.
