Game of Thrones prequel on track for 2022

HBO president teases what's to come after success at the Emmys.

House of the Dragon, the prequel to Game of Thrones, is on track for 2022 according to HBO president Casey Bloys.

In an interview with Deadline following the Emmy Awards yesterday, he confirmed casting remains underway. Little else is known about the straight-to-series project from George R.R. Martin, Vince Gerardis, Ryan Condal, and Miguel Sapochnik.

HBO yesterday scored 30 awards (including Creative Emmy wins) in 2020, with Watchmen, Succession, Bad Education, Last Week Tonight with John Oliver and Euphoria amongst winners.

“I am thrilled,” he said. “It’s especially nice because there was a question how HBO would do. This is a pretty good way to answer that question.”

Next year Perry Mason, Lovecraft Country, The Righteous Gemstones and new seasons of Barry and Insecure will also be eligible.

New seasons of both Succession and Euphoria have been delayed by the pandemic. Succession‘s third season is currently targeting a late fall (Spring AU) start, while Euphoria is looking to begin filming Season 2 in early 2021, Bloys said.
