Industry awards shift online

AWGIEs, Walkleys, ADG Awards amongst growing list of events shifting online in 2020.

More industry awards are shifting to online presentations this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The 53rd Annual AWGIE Awards was due to be held in September, but will now take place on online on Tuesday 8 December.

Nominees for the annual Australian Writers’ Guild event will be announced in mid-September.

The Walkley Awards will be announced on November 20 through SKY News and live-streamed on the Walkley website. Finalists will be announced on Thursday October 15. The traditional Gala Dinner, planned for Tamworth this year, will now take place in 2021.

“We had hoped that, despite the uncertainty created by COVID-19, we would be able to come together in person to celebrate the hard work, courage, innovation and resilience shown by the media over the past 12 months,” the Walkley Foundation said in a statement.

“However, the restrictions stemming from COVID-19, including border closures and limitations on guest numbers, sadly make it impossible for us to hold a traditional Gala Dinner this November.”

Meanwhile the Australian Directors Guild Awards will also be held online on October 19. It had previously announced plans for September, then an event at the City Recital Hall in Sydney. Nominees are here.

Australian Screen Editors will also hold an online event for their annual Ellie Awards.

Screen Producers are yet to announce plans for their 2020 SPA Awards, and annual Screen Forever conference, which is due to be held on the Gold Coast this year.

The 10th Annual Equity Ensemble Awards were announced last month and will be presented at a ceremony when it is safe to do so.

The ARIA Awards are currently due to take place in Sydney in November. AACTA Awards are yet to outline plans for their annual December event.
