Kelli Underwood to call first AFL game for FOX Footy

History-making Kelli Underwood to commentate Richmond v Fremantle match.

AFL broadcaster Kelli Underwood will call her first AFL match for FOX Footy tonight.

She joins Jason Dunstall, David King and Mark Howard when Richmond meets Fremantle at Metricon Stadium, Qld.

Underwood was the first female AFL caller in history on Network 10 in 2009, followed by more than a decade on ABC Radio and all AFLW seasons for FOX Footy.

Ahead of the game, FOX Footy appears to be taking a defensive strategy.

“I’ve called hundreds and hundreds of games now and for me it’s my job, it’s what I do, so it was a no brainer. All I’ve ever wanted to do is be good at my job and earn people’s respect,” Underwood said.

“It’s 2020, it’s old fashioned to carry on about women in sport and I honestly believe that’s something people did a long time ago. If someone is good enough to call they’re good enough to call, it’s not about their gender,” said Steve Crawley, Executive Director, FOX Sports.

Underwood again commentates during round 16 when Brisbane take on Gold Coast and more immediately this Sunday, hosting Sunday Footy.

7pm tonight on FOX Footy.

  1. Should’ve seen the reaction to her calling on Bigfooty from the majority in the Richmond v Freo gameday thread. Unfortunately she just isn’t very good, she wasn’t good the last time she commentated either (years ago) so I thought that was the end of her commentating AFL.
