Nine Upfronts 2021: what can we expect?

Much of Nine's showcase will be renewals, but there is new Reality, Drama & News coming.

Nine’s Upfronts for 2021 will be held this Wednesday.

A virtual presentation will take place at 3pm for the first time ever to over 1000 marketers, agencies, production / industry and media guests (and no this is not accessible for general public).

Nine is going early because the impact of COVID has seen marketers begin the planning process for 2021. Many of the announcements will be sales / marketer focused, around data and buying automation.

This is also Nine’s first Upfronts with Radio included (Stan is not included).

Having had a strong 2020, much of the Programming showcase is expected to consist of renewals, with select new titles, plus some holdovers from 2020 which did not screen.

A major change will be the absence of The Voice, which has gone to Seven. There are whispers Love Island will step in -a very big success on BVOD- but Celebrity Apprentice is reportedly in the pipeline (did producers get Julie Bishop across the line?), and new reality series The Parent Jury did not air in 2020.

Republished from 2020 Upfronts:

The Parent Jury
Brave mums and dads who believe their parenting style is the best will be put to the ultimate test in The Parent Jury. In this controversial new series, opinionated mums and dads will take turns judging each other’s parenting styles. Helicopter parents, tiger parents, free-range parents, designer parents and strict authoritarians will all show how they bring up their families with a view to convincing the group that their way is best.

Step Back in Time
Step Back in Time, a variety show coming to Nine in 2020, will offer viewers a blast from the past through a familiar lens. The show will celebrate key moments in pop culture from TV, movies, music, news, sport, advertising and technology, with each episode focusing on a particular era. An action-packed, fun-filled program that all comes together in front of a live studio audience.

TV Tonight will be Live blogging the event from 3pm AEST Wednesday.

  1. After reading that blurb about The Parent Jury, I’m not surprised Nine didn’t go ahead with it. Sounds like Nine’s version of Yummy Mummies, that disaster Seven put up against Australian Ninja Warrior three years ago, and which which sunk without a trace.
