Seven signs Supercars deal

Supercars will return to Seven from 2021 with a new broadcasting agreement to 2025.

Supercars will return to Seven from 2021 as the network announces a new long-term agreement to 2025.

Six races will be broadcast Live, including the iconic Bathurst 1000, plus the Bathurst 12 Hour race, with live streaming on 7plus.

Highlights from other races will be replayed on the Seven Network and 7plus the same day of the race.

It follows an announcement made overnight by FOX Sports.

James Warburton, Seven West Media Managing Director and a former Supercars CEO said: “Seven and Supercars have so much shared history, so we’re excited to begin the next part of our story together with this multi-year deal. Seven has long been a pioneer in motorsport coverage; our world-leading innovations include the iconic RaceCam, which made its debut in our coverage of the 1979 Bathurst 1000.

“I want to thank Sean, the Supercars Board and the Supercars team for this outcome, which is a great result for Seven, Supercars, and most importantly, the fans. It will help fuel the growth of the sport into the future. We can’t wait to bring Supercars home to Seven from next year.”

Sean Seamer, Supercars CEO, said: “This is an exciting day for Supercars. Not only are we continuing our great relationship with FOX Sports, but now announcing a new agreement with our original broadcast partners, the Seven Network for our free to air coverage. This caps off a great few months for the sport in challenging times which is testament to all the work that the entire team has put in to not only keep this year’s championship going but preparing us for the future too.”

Seven previously broadcast key motorsports from 1963 to 1996 and again from 2007 to 2014.

Lewis Martin, Managing Director Seven Melbourne and Network Head of Sport, said: “Motorsport has always been a passion of ours at Seven, and there’s no greater motorsport in Australia than Supercars. We’re thrilled to bring Supercars back to Seven from next year and with it what are sure to be so many more iconic Australian motorsport moments.

“This partnership between Seven and Supercars is going to deliver a spectacular experience for viewers, with these key races Live and Free on Seven and 7plus, and every race replayed the same day – simply an unbeatable offering.

“Everyone at Seven is excited to continue our legacy of broadcasting Supercars, delivering our audience a better experience than ever before.”

Seven’s coverage gets underway early next year.

  1. The only thing 7 is really paying for is Bathurst (both 1000 & 12 hour) any other races shown will be thrown in for free & let’s be honest do many people care about the rest of the races anyway.

    1. Because cash-strapped networks shouldn’t be wasting money in these times – and this move is questionable when the product is not what it used to be. Supercars should be paying Seven to show the races.

  2. Given Warburton’s previous connection to Supercars, the fact Ten were no longer interested, and I’m assuming neither were Nine, and Seven’s financial issues (including their cricket battle), I wonder what bargain basement deal was done to secure this. Feels like nothing more than a token gesture for Supercars to be able to say they still have races on free-to-air, and for Seven to be able to say they have another sport on their network.

  3. Warburton was the guy who first put Supercars behind a paywall during his time as CEO there. The sport has steadily lost ground in the ensuing years and I don’t see this announcement as changing that in any way.

  4. Again there is no mention of the cost which is reported to be $200 million over 5 years and sorry 6 races Live is very lame and I’m pretty sure that 10 showed the same or perhaps more ,I have to say that James Warburton isn’t the Messiah channel 7 was hoping for.

      1. Yes I think $4M plus the usual suspects I believe not fully sure ,still I think they have paid way over what it’s worth anyway ,will interest wane once Holden pulls pin which is at the end of the season now
