The Walking Dead confirms final season

After original series wraps there will be another spin-off with Daryl Dixon and Carol Peletier.

The Walking Dead will end after its upcoming 11th Season -but more spin-off series are on the way.

Season 11, which was originally meant to air this year but was delayed due to the pandemic, will air across two years, beginning in late 2021. This will comprise 24 new episodes in total.

But the universe lives on with two planned spin-offs in the form of a Daryl Dixon and Carol Peletier series, as well as anthology series Tales of The Walking Dead, plus existing spin-offs Fear the Walking Dead and The Walking Dead: World Beyond.

The untitled Daryl-Carol spinoff will see fan favourites Norman Reedus and Melissa McBride continue on in those roles. The show set for 2023 is co-created by showrunner Angela Kang and former series showrunner Scott Gimple. Kang will also serve as showrunner on the spinoff.

“I look forward to digging in with our brilliant writers, producers, directors, cast and crew to bring this epic final chapter of Robert Kirkman’s story to life for our fans over the next two years,” said Kang. “The Walking Dead flagship series has been my creative home for a decade and so it’s bittersweet to bring it to an end, but I could not be more excited to be working with Scott Gimple and AMC to develop a new series for Daryl and Carol. Working with Norman Reedus and Melissa McBride has been a highlight of my career and I’m thrilled that we get to keep telling stories together.”

“It’s been ten years ‘gone bye;’ what lies ahead are two more to come and stories and stories to tell beyond that,” said Gimple. “What’s clear is that this show has been about the living, made by a passionate cast, team of writer/producers, producers, and crew, bringing to life the vision put forth by Robert Kirkman in his brilliant comic — and supported by the best fans in the world. We have a lot of thrilling story left to tell on TWD, and then, this end will be a beginning of more Walking Dead — brand new stories and characters, familiar faces and places, new voices, and new mythologies. This will be a grand finale that will lead to new premieres. Evolution is upon us. The Walking Dead lives.”

The Walking Dead airs in Australia on FOX Showcase.

  1. Well I’m gutted. I will miss the mainline show. But has the pain from a cancelling of a show ever been softened as much as this announcement? A Carol/Daryl spin-off, Rick Grimes centric movies (including planned movies of other characters and factions), two mainline ongoing spin-off shows… no one will ever be able to put a knife to the brain of this franchise. I’m in for the lot!
