Wafer thin battles on Monday

Ratings: Two close battles on Monday with The Block vs Masked Singer, Sunrise vs Today.

Nine and 10 reality shows went to war again last night with wafer thin results -but that only left Seven’s dish sinking even lower.

The Block (789,000) barely pipped The Masked Singer (775,000) but the latter did rise to 918,000 for the reveal of Simon Pryce as Puppet, and topped the demos.

They edged out 7:30 (658,000), Australian Story (600,000) and Plate of Origin (393,000).

Later Have You Been Paying Attention? was a winner at 764,000, ahead of Four Corners (510,000), Media Watch (494,000) and Celebrity IOU (337,000).

But there was also another extremely close battle on Monday with Sunrise on 250,000 narrowly ahead of Today‘s 242,000 -the closest margin since October 2018. News Breakfast drew 134,000 / 55,000.

There were even close results in 5pm game shows.

10’s primary channel pushed Seven’s into third place but Nine network won Monday with 27.0% then Seven 24.7%, 10 22.5%, ABC 17.7% and SBS 8.1%.

Nine News drew 1.06m / 1.01m for Nine then A Current Affair (729,000) and Hot Seat 555,000 / 335,000. Nine News late edition was 246,000.

Seven News was #1 at 1.1m / 1.05m for Seven then The Chase 566,000 / 328,000 and Home & Away (577,000). 9-1-1: Lone Star pulled 250,000 and Chicago Fire was 189,000.

The Project drew 565,000 / 344,000 for 10. 10 News First was 369,000 / 250,000 and Just for Laughs: Uncut was 290,000.

ABC News won its slot at 754,000 for ABC. Q&A (296,000) and The Drum (194,000) followed.

On SBS it was How the Victorians Built Britain (203,000), SBS World News (174,000), 24 Hours in Emergency (150,000), 8 Out of 10 Cats Does Countdown (89,000) and Mastermind (83,000).

NCIS led multichannels at 214,000.

  1. I was never a huge fan of Karl but now I enjoy the rapport he and Ally have built up over the past 8 months or so. Enjoying Brooke as well and no more silly constant cash giveaways. I would like to see Charles Croucher stay as newsreader. I think Alex tries to be funny and it is just annoying. Sunrise got too cocky for me.

  2. Ill admit I was always a Sunrise over Today, but tuned over to Karl and Ally a while back and haven’t switched back, the banter the two of them have is great. Reading today’s headlines about the rant that Sam went on, highlights why I switched. How about we start highlighting the good things that are happening in Victoria not all the negatives, I live in Melbourne and if i didn’t I would assume things were much worse than they actually are, sure I’d love to go to the pub for a beer with mates or a wander around the shops, but honestly its really not “tat” bad, its been much worse around the world. Stop giving airtime to all the vocal minority, and start giving voices to everyone else.

  3. Loving this season of the Masked Singer especially the great production during the performances with all the dancers, costumes and graphics. I also prefer the crew dressed in funny costumes over a real life audience to be honest. I just think it adds to the fun of the show. My only complaint is that the season doesn’t go longer.

    1. Agree the production values have improved this year, and I love the solution of animal mosh pit. That said, there was a lot of boasting about the level of stars and it’s looking like biggest name Mark Philippoussis went first. Someone from an Emmy winning series? Sophie Monk in Entourage? C’mon…

      1. Wow thanks David. I’ve spent ages trying to figure out who the person from an Emmy winning series was and almost thought Ten were making it up.

TMS has done well to stay on course given everything that’s been going on but the cast has been dissapointing, especially given how Ten hyped it up by saying there’d be big names who could now come on given their performing schedules had cleared. I personally think last season had the better cast.

  4. I noticed that Melbourne v Fremantle match didnt crack top 20 in the multichannels last night (Last night was a boring, scrappy match played in wet weather in Cairns).
I haven’t watched a bit of HYBPA as my TV signal was poor but who won?

          1. Ed Kavalee is a guy who wins most of the time on HYBPA. To have him win a lot of nights is quite annoying. He has won over 60 nights since the launch of the show in 2013. I want to see new winners on the show, not the same ones again. This year HYBPA saw new winners like Lloyd and Geraldine.

  5. The almost rapid improvement in ratings for Today is troubling. Seven is worried because for the first time ever last night during the 6:00pm news bulletin, Mark Ferguson said “now here’s a look at what’s coming up tomorrow on Sunrise” with the segment thanking Fergo and Kochie and Nat doing their piece. As for the gap between The Chase Australia and the drivel on Nine, it perplexes the mind because The Chase went unimpeded for a very long time and is one of the best game shows of all time.

      1. The Morning Show has pounded their adversary since 2007. Nine has employed the likes of Kerri-Ann, Sonia Kruger and David Campbell to take them on and still can’t knock them off their roosts. As for primetime, Seven have had more than the desired sum of unsuccessful titles but also making a comeback.

          1. Jacob, that “argument” has been spouted an innumerable amount of times. I could easily say that Nine does well because of their stranglehold in Sydney and Perth but I don’t. A more appropriate statement is that each network and city is dominant for varied reasons. End of subject. Case closed. Moving on.

  6. Here’s a thought….maybe Sam Armytage’s semi-regular ranting, from her high-horse in central Sydney, about how the Victorian and Queensland Government’s are managing their pandemic response and the border issue in relation to Queensland, isn’t playing well in Melbourne and Brisbane.

    1. In Sam’s defence she has a national show and lets face it, no one seem to complain about Karl using the Today Show for the same purpose. By the way, there are a lot of Victorians who agree with the opinions expressed by Sam, but this isn’t the forum to deal with the Victorian Governments response to COVID19

  7. Can now see why Sunrise is losing it. I have watched Sunrise since it started but never again. Every segment was Melbourne bashing this morning. Sam has become very vocal in her right wing views. They have been giving air time to Sam Newman and Tim Smith, the Victorian politician who makes Pauline Hanson look good. Even their Facebook posts have gone very Daily Mail(ish). From this morning many Victorians will never watch again.

    1. Yes there is a bit of “kick a vic” in the Sydney produced media at the moment….That Sydney Melbourne rivalry again. But then again as a victorian who has been affected financially and mentally bad government decisions….have to admit, we are a basket case at the moment.

  8. I wonder if the self opinionated, attack dog style of interviewing by Sam Armytage has anything to do with the gap closing between Sunrise and Today. It hasn’t stopped me watching Sunrise, but it has changed my opinion of Sam.

    1. I’m done with Sunrise. Sam and KAK are 2 peas in a pod. I can only watch 30mins of morning television before I head off to work and it’s now only on News Breakfast.

  9. All the mystery’s been taken out of The Masked Singer at this point except for perhaps Bush Ranger (as there are a few singers with very similar voices), but I have one particular in mind. I am expecting Kate Miller-Heidke to take the crown (no pun intended!) as her voice is unmistakable. It’s like she wasn’t even trying to disguise her voice last night (and I have watched her Zero Gravity performances enough times to know).

It would be a bit odd that they would have three Eurovision acts over the course of a single season. I hope they have a group performance like they did last year as it was nice to hear from the past performers again, especially those that were only there briefly.
