Airdate: 101 East: Young, Black and Behind Bars

Al Jazeera English current affairs program looks at deaths in custody and juvenile imprisonment in WA.

On Friday Al Jazeera English’s Asia-Pacific current affairs program 101 East will screen the first of a two part special investigation Young, Black and Behind Bars.

The story by Senior Correspondent Drew Ambrose looks at death in custody, raising the age of criminal responsibility to 14 and how high rates of youth incarceration impact upon Indigenous Australians, against the background of a Black Lives Matter movement that is resonating around the world.

Filmed in Western Australia, the state with the country’s highest rate of Aboriginal imprisonment, it features candid interviews with those caught up in the system including a 13-year-old Indigenous boy who was detained a dozen times last year.

The program also follows police patrols in remote outback communities and goes inside the state’s only youth jail.
