Earnest space drama Away has been axed -just six weeks after its Netflix premiere.
Hilary Swank starred as astronaut Emma Green, who leads an international crew to Mars aboard the spaceship “Atlas,” called the Mars Joint Initiative.
It also featured Josh Charles, Vivian Wu, Mark Ivanir, Ato Essandoh, Ray Panthaki and Talitha Bateman.
The show was created by Andrew Hinderaker (Penny Dreadful, Pure Genius) but at Rotten Tomatoes it managed a 59% critic’s score (and 60% audience score).

I felt this show felt designed to appeal to a bunch of different audiences and ended up appealing to non of them.
Space soap opera with a touch of ‘Big Brother’ reality TV is how I would describe ‘Away’.
It is a well made show with a lot of thought put into functional design for a spacecraft but has totally ignored the ‘Right Stuff’ selection process of astronaut training, Hillary Swank would not have passed selection as commander, they were the worst possible crew to send on a Mars mission.
I would have watched season 2, I suspect the producers thought it was a done deal, they will be disappointed.
Is it just me or does Netflix like to quickly cancel female leads! Slow yes, but superb acting. That’s what we want to see.
‘The Core’ on this week if one wishes to see Hilary S in the film credited with “worst science in a movie ever”- and the most infuriating cancellation on a sci fi cliff hanger still remains ‘Stargate Universe’ S2…
I agree with your comment about Stargate Universe, but the ending did leave viewers with a sense of optimism,
The staff writers must have known from the start of season 2 that the show and the Stargate franchise was concluded.
It’s not picked up yet, but they’re developing a new Stargate series which would address what happened in Universe. It’s with in the same continuity as the other shows, will feature familiar faces from across the different shows.
That’s a shame. So they’re just going to strand them on Mars?
“Earnest” is such a good way to describe this series. I’m about half way through. I think it would have done well as a limited series given the pace. Sorry I won’t see what happens to the crew though.
Is season 2 already in the can or are they stuck on Mars???
A little disappointed this is cancelled. It wasn’t classic SyFy but I enjoyed apart from the constant introspection of characters.
Bugger !
Netflix are experts at cancelling good shows too early… (Santa Clarita Diet as an eg.) but this show was sooooooo boring, it was slower than a wet week and non of the characters were interesting, I only got through a couple of episodes before I wanted them to all be attacked by a stow away alien.
