SBS picks up Atlantic Crossing, The Minister.

New dramas from Norway and Iceland are set for SBS.

SBS has recently picked up new Scandinavian series including wartime drama series, Atlantic Crossing and political drama The Minister.

Produced by Cinenord, in co-production with Beta Film for Norway’s NRK, Atlantic Crossing is an 8 x 60-minute series starring Kyle MacLachlan (Twin Peaks, Desperate Housewives), Sofia Helin (The Bridge) and Tobias Santelmann (The Last Kingdom).

The series is set during World War II and based on the true story of Norwegian crown princess Märtha, who flees from Norway and seeks refuge in the US’ White House, where she tries to convince President Roosevelt to help save her country and Europe from the Nazis. However, Roosevelt does not want to alienate his voters, who are strongly opposed to the US entering the war, and Märtha realises the only way she can help Norway is to use her position to influence US politics.

Iceland drama The Minister is an eight-part series stars Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald actor Ólafur Darri Ólafsson as a populist Prime Minister whose worsening mental health condition threatens the stability of the government.

SBS is yet to announce a date for its 2021 Upfronts, expected in November.

  1. Norway have set a few benchmarks for making and writing TV drama productions in my opinion, Iceland have also produced some good shows, but the dour characters in a cold climate can be distracting if you don’t regularly watch Nordic noir shows.
I will watch these two new SBS on Demand releases with interest.
