Top Gear goes to the drive-in

UK series finds a novel solution to scenes it usually films in a studio.

Top Gear has returned in the UK, but instead of its indoor studio, the show went with its very own socially-distanced drive-in, with 200 cars, 500 people, eight-metre high video screens and three hosts on a stage. Ten supercars were provided to the production by manufacturers, with Lamborghini, Ferrari and Porsche among the brands on display.

Since the departure of Clarkson / Hammond / May (and thereafter Matt Le Blanc) the show is now hosted by Paddy McGuinness, Andrew “Freddie” Flintoff and Chris Harris.

“This is the first outdoor Top Gear and obviously we’ve had to do it within the lines of being COVID friendly and social distancing, but actually it’s quite a happy accident really because it looks absolutely amazing,” said McGuinness.

This season filmed both before and after lockdown but there were mixed reactions to the season premiere, including some karaoke warbling at a petrol station.

Radio Times also has a behind the scenes video on mounting the drive-in.

Top Gear now premieres in Australia on 9RUSH.

  1. They have generally been very well received and bought the banter back to the show. It’s been promoted in the UK from BBC2, where it has aired for decades, to BBC1 – and that was announced pre-COVID too so isn’t just filling a scheduling hole.

  2. I’m curious as to whether anyone watched the last series with this new crew and if so what did they think? When it came to 9Rush I recorded it, but the TV guide was well out and I only ended up with around 30 minutes or so of each episode, so gave up on it very quickly.
