The offbeat minds of Simon Pegg & Nick Frost (Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz, Big Train, Spaced) turn their attention to the supernatural once again for a new 8 part comedy Truth Seekers.
Frost stars as Smyle ‘s mild-mannered internet technician Gus Roberts who dabbles in paranormal investigations in his spare time, uploading videos to his YouTube channel, Truth Seekers.
Simon Pegg takes on a supporting role as Smyle’s manager-in-dodgy-wig, who teams Gus up with his new assistant Elton (Samson Kayo), surname John.
Together they embark on adventures in their van visiting old British homes, fixing black spots and wifi drop-outs, but discovering far more paranormal capers along the way. While Gus delightfully whips out his video camera -and even a home-made ghost detector- Elton is far more nervous at the prospect.
“Are you sure we should be playing that? Haven’t you seen The Ring?” he asks.
Their first encounter is in a Victorian home owned by widower Miss Connelly (Patricia Brake) who is getting no reception on her TV. While Gus suspects she has cut wires merely to commandeer a little company, nervous Elton hears other bumps that hint at celestial tenants…
The ensemble daringly features Malcolm McDowell as Gus’ cantankerous elderly father Richard, Elton’s agoraphobic sister Helen (Susan Wokoma) and the inexplicable Astrid (Emma D’Arcy) who spends much of her time stalking Gus and dodging spectres she sees…
The humour is character-driven and consciously low-key, with considerable focus on story over quick punchlines. But as the story progresses and the pair fall deeper down the rabbit hole of things paranormal, they may find themselves as unlikely heroes uncovering a conspiracy that could bring about Armageddon for the entire human race. Perfectly timed for halloween.
This positions the show well to gather another cult audience for Pegg & Frost.
If you’re a fan of their work, this should tickle your funny bone again.
Truth Seekers screens Friday October 30 on Amazon Prime.
