The A Word follows a messy, extended family with a child with autism at its centre. When 5-year-old Joe is diagnosed with autism, it brings to the surface the tensions and fault lines that run throughout his family, as they struggle to adapt to the changes in their lives and, more importantly, to learn to communicate.

Series One, Episode One:
In their idyllic Lake District home, the extended Hughes family reunites for Joe’s fifth birthday party. But the tensions soon rise among Alison, Paul, and patriarch Maurice when newly-arrived Eddie and Nicola suggest Joe has communication problems.
