Airdate: Wild Australia: After the Fires

Hugo Weaving narrates a new recovery documentary for ABC following a catastrophic summer.

Next month ABC will screen Wild Australia: After the Fires, a documentary by Northern Pictures which charts the year that follows catastrophic bushfires, and highlights the long-term recovery.

Hugo Weaving is narrator, in what appears to be a special pitched at an international market with references to “wildfires” over “bushfires.”

Directed by Cian O’Clery (Love On The Spectrum, Employable Me), produced and written by Karina Holden (Big Weather, Magical Land of Oz), and narrated by actor and ambassador to animal rights organisation Voiceless, Hugo Weaving, Wild Australia: After the Fires follows the hard-working carers, dedicated scientists and passionate volunteers who are immersed in the ecological recovery of Australia.

The program introduces viewers to inspiring people dedicating their time to assist wildlife survival, including Kangaroo Island residents who have spent countless hours scanning nearby bush to rescue koalas; a naturalist in NSW’s Southern Highlands who passionately monitors the local wombat population; and ecologists and scientists taking stock of which species may have survived infernos, against the odds.

Wild Australia: After the Fires provides an urgent message to safeguard our environment and bring about the necessary intervention required to maintain biodiversity on our planet before it is too late.

This program is part of the ABC Your Planet initiative, which builds on the ABC’s coverage of climate and environmental issues by enabling audiences to counter challenges such as climate change and the increasing toll of extreme weather events in their daily lives.

Production Credit: A Northern Pictures production in association with the Australian Broadcasting Association. Directed by Cian O’Clery. Producer and writer Karina Holden. EP for ABC Documentary Manager Stephen Oliver.

Tuesday, 1 December at 8:30pm on ABC.
