ARIAs low as industry acknowledges tough year

Ratings: After a year without gigs, the music industry came together for a virtual awards, but it struggled on a quiet night.

At 2+ hours the ARIA Awards rarely draws a big crowd but last night’s 287,000 was well down on 2019’s 417,000.

Hard Quiz led its slot at 670,000 then 7:30 (631,000), Highway Patrol (461,000), Jamie’s Easy Meals For Every Day (311,000 / 262,000) and the ARIA Awards (287,000).

Gruen was the top entertainment show at 678,000. Reputation Rehab (381,000), Britain’s Got Talent wrapped at 244,000 then Bull (191,000 / 147,000) and The Great Train Robbery (144,000).

There was a hefty win by Sunrise over the competition, at 288,000 it even pipped the ARIAs audience in primetime.

Seven network won Wednesday with 28.8% then Nine 25.1%, ABC 20.5%, 10 17.3% and SBS 8.3%.

Seven News was #1 at 904,000 / 873,000 for Seven. Home & Away (550,000) and The Chase (474,000 / 310,000) followed.

Nine News (818,000 / 793,000) was best for Nine. A Current Affair won its slot at 629,000 then Hot Seat (422,000 / 260,000). A replay of Queen + The Adam Lambert Story managed 166,000.

ABC News was 603,000. Adam Hills: The Last Leg (206,000) and The Drum (139,000) followed.

The Project pulled 415,000 / 267,000 for 10. 10 News First was 292,000 / 193,000.

On SBS it was Building Britain’s Canals (175,000), SBS World News (150,000), Untold Australia (86,000) and Mastermind (71,000).

NCIS topped multichannels at 177,000.

News Breakfast: 125,000 / 70,000

  1. I never knew where it was on but on a Wednesday I already was iquing to capacity and watching multiple channels so a really stupid night to put it on. I hope it’s on catch up though.

  4. I honestly forgot they were on until I heard this morning. I can see them move to a multichannel next year with figures that low. The thing is too mid week award ceremonies, I don’t understand it honestly. Also too I haven’t watched much on tv lately either. There is nothing to watch bar a few things and this has been the case for a few years too not just pandemic season. Sport seems to be the only thing I’ll watch live if anything.

I can’t watch any award show – they all go too long and the recipients often see an award win as a chance to express social/political views rather than as an opportunity to thank the people that contributed to their success. I must admit the tribute to Helen Reddy looked terrific on the news this morning though.

  6. The Arias are such a joke and it’s very unsurprising that no one watches it. Almost every single person I know has no idea who any of the ‘winners’ are, it’s so ridiculous. Who votes for these ‘winners’?? The most popular and deserving Australian singers are always snubbed at these awards but disrespectfully always asked to host the show or present an award for viewers sakes. They need to up haul the voting system and bring the awards show back with a new outlook, because as it stands, there is absolutely zero relevance for this ceremony anymore and no one cares.

    1. Just because a winner might get more airplay on TripleJ than Hit network doesn’t make them less deserving. I agree the ceremony sits awkwardly. Last year for example you had Richard Wilkins doing the voice over work announcing twenty-something indie performers to the stage. It’s an odd juxtaposition.

    1. Essentially Bullswool, I can explain. Today started breathing down the neck of Sunrise only a mere two months ago because viewers of both were noting on this and other sites that Samantha Armytage was proselytizing the audience with her supposed “right wing agenda”. I never saw it that way. The last few weeks, Allison Langdon has espoused the same attitude, criticizing Scott Morrison when he was in Queensland, arguing he wasn’t there to talk about the budget but endorse the Queensland Opposition Leader. She has incessantly lauded the current Queensland premier. Then a mere two days ago had the daring to play moral authority and enjoyed a war of words with the NSW Premier. If Allison is shrewd, she should desist playing this game because it can rid her of any journalistic integrity and audience following.

        1. That is the case Mr Knox. I didn’t mean to assign the shift in viewership to one topic but simply accentuate the point one must be careful while serving as a panelist on a breakfast/morning television show.

      2. It’s amazing that you can recognise Allison Langdon’s supposed bias, but not Sam Armytage’s. I don’t watch Today, so don’t have an opinion on Allison’s attitude, but I do watch Sunrise, and Sam’s bias was painfully obvious.

    2. As Queenslanders, we switched to Today when Sam was in full Anti-Qld border mode, but Karl can be a bit much at times. He’s a great interviewer when he’s serious, but the constant attempt at slapstick humour does wear thin after a while. ABC breakfast is the dominant channel for us in the mornings now.

  8. The Archie Roch Hall Of Fame induction and I Am Woman performance were sensational. An impressive feat to put this on during a pandemic. I was pleasantly surprised with Delta as host too. It was very long though, that can’t have helped the numbers.

    1. It wasn’t unfortunately. One or 2 good performances, a lot of filler and indulgent acceptance speeches by the usual suspects. Agree the IAM performance was stellar!

  11. Hate to state the obvious but two things..
    Average person doesn’t care about BS award shows like ARIAs
    The other is the young’uns don’t watch commercial TV like they used to…so that would count into it..will be interesting to see what figures YouTube state for their online views..etc
