Axed: neXt

US thriller with John Slattery culled after just two episodes.

New US drama neXt has been swiftly axed in the US, after just two episodes screened.

The thriller from Manny Coto (24: Legacy) stars John Slattery and centres around the emergence of a deadly, rogue artificial intelligence that combines pulse-pounding action with a layered examination of how technology is invading our lives and transforming us in ways we don’t yet understand.

Variety reports it drew only 2.8 million US viewers per episode.

Sources say that rising production costs due to the COVID-19 pandemic also played a significant part in the decision.

It is currently screening in Australia on FOX One.

  1. Manny Cotomade also made Odyssey 5 a series I didn’t mind at all, it was also about artificial intelligence and a supernatural being called the seeker, the show featured synthetic robots that looked like humans.
Maybe Manny was just trying to update the concepts previously explored in Odyssey 5, but not having seen neXt I am only guessing, but fans of Odyssey 5 did wonder if it was worth making a sequel.
