News Breakfast pips Sunrise, Today on Thursday.

Just 2,000 viewers difference but ABC breakfast show manages a rare win over Seven.

News Breakfast has managed a rare win over Sunrise and Today as viewers flocked to the tight US election counting yesterday.

It was the first ever win for the the News Breakfast team in the competitive 7-9am slot.

ABC has the advantage of two channels, ABC and ABC News screening simultaneously, which also sidesteps some delays for other breakfast shows due to timezone differences.

Yesterday all three shows enjoyed a ratings lift in 5 city metro:

News Breakfast: 310,000
Sunrise: 308,000
Today: 258,000

Michael Rowland, currently in Washington DC. told TV Tonight, “It has been shown that viewers will always flock to the breakfast show with a heavy and trusted focus on news when the big stories break.

“As a former US corespondent, having me on the ground to co-anchor the show has also added has added to the credibility of what the ABC has been offering, not just at breakfast but through the week.”

  1. Seven and Nine might be worried about losing a few thousand viewers from their main channels, but it seems silly in the long run to keep only broadcasting delayed news. At least broadcast live on 7Mate / Gem to give viewers the option, otherwise the ABC will continue to gain in non-AEDT timezones especially when there’s genuine breaking news.

  2. Exactly, and in this era of a fast moving, 24 hour news cycle, the commercial networks need to look at their model of delayed news into certain markets, particularly with the breakfast shows.
