Nine appoints Head of Rugby

Murray Shaw to oversee network rugby following Nine's broadcast deal with Rugby Australia.

Nine has appointed Murray Shaw as its new Head of Rugby, following its broadcast deal with Rugby Australia.

He has most recently been Executive Producer at the Australian Institute Of Sport, but held roles at FOX Sport, NEP Australia, Victoria Racing Club and SKY News.

Nine’s Director of Sport, Brent Williams said, “Murray is an extremely experienced television producer having spent the last 20 years of his career specifically focusing on sport and live sports productions.

“His time with both FOX Sports and SKY News has seen him involved in some of the biggest sporting events in the world including Olympic Games, Cricket World Cups, Rugby World Cups, Football World Cups and Socceroos matches both here in Australia and around the world.

“He is a passionate sports fan in general but has a love for the Waratahs, Roosters and the Sydney Swans …but we won’t hold that against him.

“His experience in sports broadcasting, stakeholder relationships and management of talent and production teams made him the ideal choice.”

  1. As a rugby fan I’m holding my judgement regarding this new TV deal with Nine and Stan.
On the positive side Nine does have plenty of experience in sports broadcasting, however expecting Nine’s management to fully share promotional resources with the NRL could become a contentious matter for rugby fans, especially with Nines selective programming history for its non preferred sports events.
Nines attitude with its FIFA World Cup rights which relied on the SBS to provide full coverage gives a clue to how this RA deal may eventually pan out.
