Nine interrupts Welcome to Country

Viewers react on social media after Nine commentators and cameras cut short traditional Welcome to Country.

State of Origin viewers took to social media last night after Nine’s broadcast from Adelaide Oval cut short the traditional Welcome to Country.

News.com.au reports local elder Karl Telfer, a Kaurna man from the Adelaide Plains region, welcomed the State of Origin with a greeting and traditional dance.

But James Bracey began speaking over the top of the music and Nine eventually cut away from the dance to an interview between Karl Stefanovic and Andrew Johns.

  1. I’m also baffled why Karl was there. It just appeared as an odd fit. With regards to the Welcome to Country. Is it so hard for networks just to keep their mouths shut for a few minutes and allow this presentation to go ahead without interruption. I’ll also add the players from New South Wales and Queensland should be on the field when Welcome to Country is presented.

  2. I too thought it was very disappointing. It wasn’t even live. I listened to the whole Welcome to Country on ABC Grandstand about 20 minutes earlier.

Let’s hope if Nine get the SANZAAR rights, they don’t show ads instead of the haka.
