SBS World Movies: summer highlights

Here's a list of summer cinema highlights designed to remind why you fell in love with film.

SBS World Movies has released a list of summer cinema highlights, with critically-acclaimed titles and stars such as Nicole Kidman, Brad Pitt, Kate Winslet, Russell Crowe, Lupita Nyong’o, Javier Bardem, Timothy Chalamet, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Jessica Chastain and Michael Fassbender among others.

These are branded under umbrellas “Summer of Discovery” and “Weekly Collections” encouraging you to  rediscover why you fell in love with film.

Premieres are in bold:

Summer of Discovery – Weekends at 8:30pm
Summer comes and go but these films will stay with you a lifetime.

Saturday December 5 – Vox Lux
Celeste (Natalie Portman) finds herself on the comeback trail when a scandal, personal struggles, and the pitfalls of fame threaten her career.

Sunday December 6 – Apocalypto
As the Mayan kingdom faces its decline, a young man is taken on a perilous journey to a world ruled by fear and oppression in this epic film nominated for three Academy Awards.

Saturday December 12 – The Kindergarten Teacher
A kindergarten teacher (Maggie Gyllenhaal) becomes obsessed with one of her students whom she believes is a child prodigy.

Sunday December 13 – Incendies
The story of twins who journey to the Middle East to discover their family history and fulfil their mother’s last wishes.

Saturday December 19 – Little Miss Sunshine
When seven-year-old Olive voices her desire to win the coveted Little Miss Sunshine crown at an upcoming beauty pageant, her wildly dysfunctional family sets out on an interstate road trip. Stars Toni Collette and Abigail Breslin.

Sunday December 20 –Wild Tales
Made up of six stories, Wild Tales is an entertaining and jaw-dropping Argentinian film about people crossing the line into madness when faced with perceived injustice.

Saturday December 26 – Lost in Translation
Bill Murray and Scarlett Johansson star in this flat-out hilarious film about two Americans who develop a surprising friendship while venturing through Tokyo.

Sunday December 27 – Lust, Caution
An espionage thriller set in WWII-era Shanghai, a young woman gets swept up in a dangerous game of emotional intrigue with a powerful political figure. Directed by Ang Lee.

Weekly Collections – Weeknights at 9:30pm

Reconnect with the magic you can only find at the movies with this enticing collection of films.

Legends of the Lens  (Monday December 14 to Friday December 18)
This collection honours the great cinematographers, directors, and creatives with an eye for all things magically visual.
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, The Last Emperor, Master and Commander: Far Side of the World, Children of Men and No Country for Old Men.

Soundtracks (Monday December 21 to Friday December 25)
Find the soundtrack of your Summer with these musical films.
Beats, Walking on Sunshine, Yuli, Billy Elliot and The Blues Brothers.

Oscar Winners (Monday December 28 to Friday January 22)
Over four big weeks, celebrate film’s finest with these award-winning masterpieces.
Precious, The Grand Budapest Hotel, The Great Beauty, 12 Years A Slave, The King’s Speech, Still Alice, Whiplash, Amour, Spotlight, Birdman, The Danish Girl, Gangs of New York, Son of Saul, Dallas Buyers Club, Zero Dark Thirty, Midnight in Paris, Her, A Separation, Blue Jasmine and The Big Short.

Biopics (Monday January 25 to Friday January 29)
A diverse collection of stories inspired by real people and events.
Cry Freedom, Tudawali, White Boy Rick, Professor Marston and the Wonder Women and Molly’s Game.

  1. I really like the World Movies channel, but, at least Vox Lux and Lost In Translation aren’t SBS premieres…World Movies premieres maybe …but come on…

    This is the channel that 7Flix should be, however I’m glad they are on SBS as they are hi-def.

    1. I like the amount of ads on the SBS World Movies service too. Just enough that you can go to the toilet or make a cuppa in an ad but not too many to ruin the flow of the movie.

    Their 8 Summer of discovery movies: 1 Taiwanese movie thats old AF, 1 movie from the Middle East, 1 movie from Argentina, 5 movies from the US

    Let’s not even get started on those weekly collections

    Meanwhile a shedload of interesting Japanese, Korean and Chinese movies go unscreened – Parasite, 12 Suicidal Teens, The Wandering Earth, Better Days, Detention, Samurai Marathon, Innocent Witness, The Captain, Pegasus, Remain Silent, The Gangster The Cop The Devil, Nezha, Integrity, Extreme Job, Lobster Cop, The Guilty Ones…

    But yeah, more American movies please

      2. So what you’re saying is that 2019 Academy Award Winning movie “Parasite” – from a Korean director, is less tantalising than The Kindergarten Teacher?

        An award winning, critical and user-loved movie, recognised worldwide for its brilliance, wouldn’t be of any interest to Australian viewers?

          wouldn’t be of any interest to Australian viewers on a channel created for ethnically diverse programs, whose main channel made a name for itself with its world cinema movie screenings?
