Celebrity Gogglebox coming in 2021

Foxtel has confirmed a Celebrity version of Gogglebox is coming, on top of two standard seasons.

An Australian Celebrity Gogglebox is coming in 2021.

Foxtel Executive Director of Television Brian Walsh told TV Tonight, “Foxtel and Endemol Shine are in advanced discussions to bring a celebrity version of Australia’s most popular entertainment series, Gogglebox to audiences in 2021.

“It’s an obvious evolution for the format, particularly now post the Covid lockdowns. We all bunkered down during winter and watched a lot more television and Gogglebox became more relevant than ever. To explore a celebrity version feels like a natural evolution of the format. It’s a proven hit in the U.K. and I’m confident we can replicate that success. We will look to the second half of next year.”

He also told Running Free Live, “The casting will be as interesting as Real Housewives of Melbourne I think!”

The Celebrity version comes on top of two seasons of the regular Gogglebox, which this week picked up an AACTA Award for Best Factual Entertainment series.

Remembering that the show likes a cross section of ages, backgrounds and class, who would you like to see in an Aussie version?

  1. Celebrity Gogglebox could be highly entertaining if the celebrities have panache, personality and are actually ‘personalities’. Fun and lively, witty and engaging. As its Channel 10 probably get Grant Denyer, Grant Denyer and, just for good measure, Grant Denyer. Perhaps with Dr Chris Brown and Julia Morris. If the powers-that-be can see beyond the same old same old, would love to see Natarsha Belling, Kerrie Ann Kennerely, Derryn Hinch, agree Denise Drysdale and Craig Bennett would be a great combo, John Wood, Johnny Young, Jana Wendt (unlikely, but great get), Todd McKenney, and yes, how good would Bert and Pattie Newton be?

  2. How about combining ‘Celebrity Gogglebox’ with ‘I’m a Celebrity Get Me Out of Here’ but its the viewers who decide which celebrity gets voted out. This way it might get rid of the celebs who are in it for the wrong reason.

‘Celebrity Gogglebox USA’ was so painful to watch that we dropped it after a few eps.

  3. The trouble with using celebrities is they are always after their next job. They arnt going to criticise a show that’s on a network they hope to be working for.

      1. So as a network are you going to employ “ talent” that has criticised a show you have on you network?? I would say the folks on gogglebox have careers outside of television

    1. I think it’s less interesting because they have a reputation/image to protect. It just feels like there’s an element of falseness to it, it doesn’t fit the Gogglebox breif. Compared to the families at home who have other normal lives like the rest of us which is just more natural and interesting imo.

  4. I think this would be great. I know it is a Foxtel product but some 10 Network celebs would be good. HYBPA has wonderful regulars (Celia, Kitty, Urzila, Anne) and I’d watch them watch TV.

    1. Ugh. If its full of celebrities then it’s just line after line of jokes from people who make a living being “funny,”. Let’s see some non comedians on their couches at home. I think that’s far more compelling and you will still get great laughs no doubt.

  5. Not sure why. I did not like the USA Celebrity version. Curtis Stone looked as bored as anything. Just because someone is a celebrity does not make them entertaining.

  6. The UK often have big name celebrities but mainly for their once a year ‘Stand Up to Cancer’ specials. In recent years they’ve had Jamie Dornan, the cast of Line of Duty, David Mitchell and his wife Anna Coren-Mitchell, Jack Whitehall, two guys from One Direction, Miranda Hart, and Ed Sheeran. The actually full season episodes of Celebrities have a mix of complete nobodies to people you’d know.
I feel we’ll get Grant Denyer, Julia Morris with her Ronnie Corbett glasses, Bonnie Anderson, somebody from Sydney morning radio, and former contestants (not celebrities) from 10’s reality shows.

  7. I like the idea. Be interesting to see who they get but i just don’t get why they don’t commission it all year long? Even if it means different families etc. I always feel like the seasons are way too short.
