I’m a Celebrity (UK) may not return to Australia

"Is it something we would want to do again, or do we want to return to Australia?” ask British producers.

British reality show I’m A Celebrity Get Me Out of Here could remain in its new Welsh setting, according to producers.

The series has traditionally been filmed in northern NSW, but shifted to a castle location in North Wales this year due to travel restrictions.

The show has remained a ratings hit with 12 million UK viewers tuning into the series premiere.

Showrunner Richard Cowles said: “Australia has been I’m A Celebrity’s natural home and the Welsh version was born out of necessity rather than choice, but we’ve learned a lot and so maybe there is a UK incarnation of the show.

“We will look at what being in Wales means for the format going forward. Is it something we would want to do again, or do we want to return to Australia?”

A poll of more than 2,000 fans found that almost two-thirds actually prefer the castle setting.

It raises further questions about whether 10 might remain in NSW and shun Africa in the future? 10 saves on travel but labor costs are probably higher at home.

  1. There are also a lot of reports saying they are looking forward in going back to Australia. Even previous camp mates said in Wales it has been to easy. Also shooting it in Australia is about escapism. They final few episodes have been good

  2. Labour costs are probably the sticking factor for permanently relocating to Australia. However, does that mean that the series is exploiting cheaper crew internationally? Not a great look.

Being a summer series, Northern NSW wouldn’t preclude the series from having decently lit live crosses, especially if they rejigged the structure of the episodes to start with Julia and Chris going into camp and revealing the Tucker trial candidates. Realistically, no one is watching to the end of the episodes purely to see who’ll be competing tomorrow.

Will be interesting to see how this prerecorded series goes, and how that might influence future series.

    1. It’s not exploitation when you pay the fair costs in other countries. Every country has its individual costs of living and standards which have no connectivity to other countries like Australia.
