New Year’s Eve: guide

Zan Rowe & Charlie Pickering host ABC's night of music & fireworks as we shut the door on 2020.

More than ever we will be watching New Year’s Eve celebrations from the safety of our couches, as we say good riddance to 2020.

ABC is screening Sydney fireworks, with a concert from both Sydney & Melbourne.

But due to an evolving situation in Sydney, plans to thank front-line workers have been postponed and crowds are limited to 10.

These are the details supplied by ABC (much of which was sent before recent news).

Updated: Events begin at 8:30pm for kids, hosted by Rove McManus, Kiki Masella and Chenelle Carr while from 9:0pm Charlie Pickering and Zan Rowe host in Melbourne with Jeremy Fernandez and Linda Marigliano in Sydney. The midnight fireworks show will last 7 mins.

Other channels will lead with music and movies. I’ve also noted a few highlights for Friday and Saturday.

  1. I love the fact it was screened on youtube so I can watch it. I will say that i loved the music acts but the choices of songs performed except for Casey Donovan was so slow . I know we have had a hell of a yeah but if I want to tune in to something like this I want to have up beat numbers.

  2. I remember the hey days at 9 where Richard Wilkins would enveil the new promo for the year while presenting MTV. It was always an extravagant affair and something to look forward to. I miss those days

  3. Having the fireworks and not allowing people to see it live is a waste of money. I have seen fireworks live and on tv and on tv it is pretty lame. The Premier should have stopped them going ahead.

    1. I agree that it is much better in person, but that’s not going to happen this year (thanks Covid-19). The fireworks are provided by the City of Sydney, so there isn’t much that the NSW Primer can do about it. Like last year (where bush fires were raging on NYE), the Fireworks have already been paid for, so it’s better to have something than nothing to show for it.

  4. I really miss The Loop. 😢 It was great seeing in the new year with Tweedie and Liv. Saturday mornings aren’t the same as ABC’s rage has had to make way for news.

    1. There’s now ABC News 24 so the Saturday morning ABC1 simulcast is pointless. I find it’s more about self-promoting ABC as the emergency and urgent news source (which it is considered to be) and the eating into Rage time started during COVID. But it’s over the top with News 24 broadcasting the same thing and they should bring back the lost Rage timeslots.

In addition to Rage on ABC for New Year’s, NITV still has Volumz throughout New Year’s morning for music fans, though not always mainstream (depending on the episodes) like The Loop was.

  5. Can’t Stop The Music is now repeated every New Year’s Eve, but so is Dinner for One. I like that SBS has Kylie Minogue and Spice Girls concerts throughout the night. It’s good to have family oriented programming through the night as either people will be visiting family or friends (within restrictions this time) with the TV being the go to option, or people will be awake through the night.

  6. I genuinely baffles me that none of the comercial networks get the rights to this, its been on the ABC since 2014.
10 don’t have much else on and they could actually do the hybpa year in review episode at the end of December rather than in November.

    1. It’s on the ABC because the other networks found it too much of a hassle to produce, for little return. Have you not seen the harsh comments the day after?

      1. Yeah hosting this seems like a poisoned chalice – something always seems to go wrong and viewers savage the hosts the following day. Not a very enjoyable way to spend your New Years Eve.
