Veteran US actor, best known for Steel Magnolias and Queen Sugar, has died.

Veteran US actor Carol Sutton, best known for Steel Magnolias and Queen Sugar, has died, aged 76.

She died on Thursday night of complications from COVID-19 having spent her last months in a New Orleans hospital.

With a prolific career on stage and screen she made her on-screen debut in 1974 with The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman. She played Nurse Pam in Steel Magnolias starring Sally Field and Dolly Parton and movie credits included Monster’s Ball, Ray, The Help, The Pelican Brief, Candyman: Farewell to the Flesh, 21 Jump Street, Glory Road, Runaway Jury and The Big Easy.

Amongst her TV credits were Treme, Claws, In the Heat of the Night, American Horror Story, True Detective, Scream Queens, Roots, Scream: The TV Series, Queen Sugar, Messiah and Lovecraft Country.

New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell said “… we will always remember her commanding stage presence, her richly portrayed characters and the warm heart she shared with her fellow cast and crew in productions such as ‘4000 Miles’ and ‘A Raisin in the Sun.’ May she rest in God’s perfect peace.”
