British writer John le Carré, best known for The Spy Who Came in from the Cold has died, aged 89.

He died in Cornwall on Saturday after a short illness, not related to COVID-19.

le Carré worked for Britain’s intelligence service before turning his experience into fiction. His books grappled with betrayal, moral compromise and the psychological toll of a secret life.

He wrote 25 novels during his career including The Spy Who Came in from the Cold, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy and The Honourable Schoolboy -the world of espionage becoming a “metaphor for the human condition”.

Many novels were adapted for film and television, including The Night Manager while he wrote screenplays for Tinker Tailor and Smiley’s People.

He also appeared in productions of Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, The Night Manager and The Little Drummer Girl.

  1. I remember reading ‘Spy’ as a teenager and seeing the film on TV about the same time-his work was so focused on character that it adapted well to TV as it wasn’t all about explosions and car chases.
